When enabling Ray Tracing in Silent Hill 2 Remake (AppID 2124490) on Linux, lighting becomes broken: the entire scene appears overly bright. Performance also drops dramatically.

With Ray Tracing off, visuals and performance are correct. On Windows 11 with the same hardware, Ray Tracing works correctly, so the problem seems specific to vkd3d-proton + Linux drivers.

This occurs indoors (e.g. Heaven’s Night) and outdoors. The Proton logs show repeated warnings about acceleration structure conversion when RT is enabled.

Software information

Game: Silent Hill 2 Remake (AppID 2124490)

Graphics settings: Ray Tracing enabled,

Proton builds tested: Proton Experimental, Proton 9.0, Proton 8.0, GE-Proton (10-15), proton-tkg (latest), proton-cachyos-10.0-20250905-slr-x86_64_v3

Result: Broken lighting + heavy performance drop when RT enabled

System information

  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (RDNA4, Navi 48)
  • Driver: Mesa 25.2.2 (RADV, radeonsi); also tested AMDVLK 2025.Q2.1 — same issue
  • Wine version: Proton Experimental (also reproducible on other Proton builds)
  • VKD3D-Proton version: bundled with Proton Experimental, Proton 9.0, GE 10-15, TKG (latest) proton-cachyos-10.0-20250905-slr-x86_64_v3

I could reproduce this on RX 9070. It seems to be something that needs to be fixed on the driver side, so I made an issue report for it here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/13922.

I'm pretty sure I tested RT when I played the game 2 months ago and it worked fine.

RTX 3090, so probably a driver bug indeed

I've swapped over to using the mesa-git drivers and am running with Proton Experimental. This happens when I turn Ray tracing on.

@MambaMoment I see both AMDVLK and RADV being detected in the log, and I also had a GPU hang when I tested with AMDVLK. Are you sure it uses RADV? You can verify which driver it's using with MangoHud and something like MANGOHUD=1 MANGOHUD_CONFIG=full %command% in the launch options.

mesa-git wouldn't fix the problem right now anyway, the MR is not merged yet.

I plan to play this game with ray tracing using radv on my RX 9070 XT. Has this been fixed before I buy the game and play it? Right now I have Mesa 25.3.0-2 stable, and Mesa 25.3.1 should be out soon. Does anyone know anything? Thanks.

Just got the game and using Mesa 25.2.6 and GE-Proton10-25 on a 9070. I can't speak for the visual artifacts - I've only tested the initial scene and nothing was off that I could pinpoint. However I've experienced the heavy performance hit with RT enabled.

Currently it works great without RT and on Epic settings, FSR3.1 quality mode (and upgraded to FSR4 by GE-Proton with the env var) and frame generation.

I swapped to CachyOS and found the problem has resolved.

ETA of Mesa 26.0 is around February.

It still happens badly with mesa-tkg-git on Arch Linux.

Which GPU are you using? Is RT enabled? Please report it on the forum (I think that's the best place to post it).

Todavía sucede mal con mesa-tkg-git en Arch Linux.
