The game crashes after a few minutes, with a pop-up "An unhandled exception occurred."

Sometimes it simply freezes with no error message and goes back to the desktop, it can happen while the Capcom logo is displayed on start-up.

Hijacking the issue slightly for a similar problem.

I'm on 9070XT with Mesa 26.0.1 and the game doesn't crash for me after a few minutes but I've hit a spot later in the game where it's a 100% repro crash with a similar call stack to yours but I also get an assertion message.

Image Image

The spot is just after the first save room in Chronic Care Center's underground, the Security Room.

Just past that room on your left is a big circular red room where upon looking into it, will trigger the crash with similar callstack.

Not sure if they're related or not but the similar callstack makes me think so, otherwise let me know if I should open a new issue.

After further testing, I was able to fix my 100% crash by removing /WineDetectionEnabled:False from the game's command line options, which is needed to access RT settings under Proton.

The crash seems to happen even if you turn RT off in settings as long as you still have it in command line options but removing it fixes it for me.

Seeing that you have RT on in settings, try disabling RT and removing this command line option?

I might try, but I really intend to play the game with RT or even PT, so if that's the only workaround for now, I'll wait for a more permanent fix.

I get you, though it might still be worth trying indeed. Might help the devs to narrow down a consistent repro across different setups.

but I've hit a spot later in the game

How far in is that? Someone else on discord ran into it after like 5 hours, which is a diabolical repro without save sharing working.

Bbrkzlr 2026-02-27 github

5 hours is kinda accurate though I took my time hunting collectibles and stuff, I'd say that it's maybe around 30-35% of the game.

I do have a save there that I'm keeping just in case you want a repro but not sure if it'll work for you if I send it over.

EDIT: The area is called "Care Center Basement" specifically if looking at walkthrough lists and such.

Root caused it thanks to a ga2mer on Discord. Working on a fix.

Fix in the linked PR.

@ZazaLeNounours can you try without PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 just to rule that out? Also, try using normal Proton Experimental, not GE.

Bbrkzlr 2026-02-27 github

@HansKristian-Work Thank you for the quick fix! I can confirm that it doesn't crash anymore at that specific spot.

I'll continue playing with RT enabled and see if there are other problematic spots. Do you want me to open a new issue if I encounter another similar crash or continue here?

HHansKristian-Work maintainer 2026-02-27 github

Make a new issue for that case.

Tried a bit more with NV and I cannot reproduce any crash on CPU with RT + DLSS and friends turned on, so not sure what to make of this. Based on the callstack it's the game itself that is responsible for the crash.

ZZazaLeNounours 2026-02-27 github

Ok, nevermind, turns out it still crashes after a certain time with the same pop-up.

DLSS + FG + PT enabled, GPU does not overheat nor is the VRAM full. Last crashes both occurred in the toilet at the very beginning of the hotel (still in the "intro" part of the game).

I tested with Proton Experimental in addition to the latest GE, same result. I tried with the .dll that come with the game as well as the latest grabbed on TechPowerUp + the various Streamline .dll from the Nvidia GitHub. Since this morning, I also upgraded my drivers the the latest (?) 590.

I attach the latest log, in case it can be of any use.

Also getting a similar crash with Max Settings (RT on High). No particular spot, just happens randomly.

This particular issue was resolved for me on an RTX 4090 with ray tracing or path tracing when the Nvidia driver version was upgraded to 590.48.01. But a new crash (only in Raccoon City, for me) that prevents using ray/path tracing happened on the newest driver 495.45.04.

Try disabling the EXPO/XMP profile in your motherboard and play some hours.
Idk what it has to do with it, but after a huge troubleshooting, that was exactly what solved that crash for me.

Make a new issue for that case.

Actually, the problem I am having with this game is weird stuttering. Seems like traversal stutter or something when panning the camera. It intensifies when using RT via /WineDetectionEnabled:False command but it is still present without it. I decided to complete the game on Windows and even though I had a hard time dealing with Windows and its crap, once setting it up properly the game was very smooth there.
I tried on both Bazzite and Cachy OS with latest stable Mesa and also Mesa-git, with latest versions of Proton Experimental, Proton GE and Proton CachyOS. Tried to update Bios version and left everything stock values. Tried different SSDs. Stutters were still there
I have a 9070xt.
If you think this can be addressed via VKD3D and you need more info or logs, please let me know. I would love to give it a second run but this time on Linux 🙏🏼
Thank you beforehand

@Desmondchaser27 I no longer get that crash dialog with 595.45.04, but I do get Xid errors in journalctl now that hard freeze the game.
