what is affecting ghost of tushima? i have this game and would be willing to test and report back
Hi @MurderFromMars, thanks a lot for offering to test!
To clarify, the freeze in Ghost of Tsushima actually happens at the very beginning of the game, right after the menus.
Here are the exact reproduction steps:
Launch the game.
Accept the PlayStation data collection/telemetry prompt.
The opening cutscene starts (the one showing a katana in the grass).
At this exact moment, the game completely freezes. It doesn't go to a black screen like TLoU, but the frame just hangs on the katana and nothing moves anymore.
If you could try to start a new game and see if you can pass that initial katana cutscene, that would be incredibly helpful.
Could you also let me know what GPU and driver version you are using? I strongly suspect this might be an issue specific to the newer Ada/Blackwell architectures (40/50 series) or the 595.xx NVIDIA driver branch.
Let me know how it goes!

i have tried starting a new game and was able to do so normally.
however upon furether investigation the game is riddled with graphical issues.
fog textures glitching out and a weird flashbang effect on it areas happening randomly at a frequent pace makes the game unplayable. but no freezing on my end. weird indeed.
I would say this is most likely the result of some nvidia regression rather than a proton issue, as such my recommendation would be to report the issue to nvidia
running Arch Linux a 4080 Super proton-cachyos and the latest 595 driver.
Looking at protondb there are multiple other reports of your issue being described. all of them are using the latest 595 driver lol.
so yeah safe to say the new driver is the common denominator

try downgrading to 590 and see if the problem still happens. i bet it doesn't
Nothing extracted yet.
I'm experiencing consistent freezes in specific scripted scenes. In TLoU Part 1, it happens during the car prologue (burning house/crash). In Ghost of Tsushima, it's a similar freeze. Redirecting the camera sometimes allows to bypass the initial freeze, but it eventually hangs with a black screen.
System Info:
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 5070 Laptop (8GB VRAM)
OS: CachyOS (Arch-based)
Kernel: 6.x-cachyos
Proton: GE-Proton-10-33
Driver: NVIDIA-SMI 595.45.04 Driver Version: 595.45.04 CUDA Version: 13.2
Description:
I am experiencing consistent GPU hangs in Sony PlayStation ports (The Last of Us Part I, Ghost of Tsushima).
In The Last of Us Part I, the game freezes during the car prologue (burning house/crash scene).
Redirecting the camera away from heavy effects (fire/smoke) sometimes delays the crash, but it eventually leads to a black screen and a total freeze.
Hybrid graphics (AMD Radeon 610M + RTX 5070) initially caused "device merging" in the menu, but forcing VK_ICD_FILENAMES to NVIDIA-only did not resolve the core crash.
Other heavy titles like Death Stranding 2 (Decima Engine) and God of War Ragnarok run perfectly on Ultra settings. The issue seems isolated specifically to the Naughty Dog engine's resource management on Blackwell GPUs

Additional Context:
Shader pre-caching was disabled to test, but the issue persists. It seems like specific D3D12 extensions used in these scenes are not correctly handled by the 595.xx driver series on the new Blackwell architecture.
