After a few mins (1-2 mins) even on the lowest settings FF VII Rebirth fills up the VRAM on a 5070M.

Software information

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

System information

  • GPU: 5070M
  • Driver: 595.58.03
  • Wine version: Any Proton version inclusing Proton Experimental
  • VKD3D-Proton version: The ones included in the official Protons

Log files

The game won't start with PROTON_LOG=1 on any official Proton version I tried. 0 other env vars were used.
Proton CachyOS 30-3-2026 seems to launch the game with PROTON_LOG=1. Here are the logs:

steam-2909400-Proton9.log
steam-2909400-Proton10.log
steam-2909400-ProtonCachyOS20260330.log

The CachyOS log is in 1080p, Low preset (on Windows the game works flawlessly in 4K Max Settings 4X Frame Gen). I literally played for 1 minute before the lag started. I will also upload a video on Youtube a little later.

Here is a video in 1440p High 4X Frame Gen as well. As i said, I can play in 4K Max Settings 4X Frame Gen just fine on Windows.

This is what I'm getting on NVK with Fragment Shader Interlock merged.

As a follow up, I tested on CachyOS with a custom kernel with the Nouveau CGROUPS patch and the booster packages installed and the game runs fine. But it crashes if the VRAM is full and it tries to load new shaders from what I understand. NVK is a work in progress though so it might be something on their side. I'll post a log.

Here's a pretty massive log cause the game just wouldn't crash. XD

I get a lot of:

1195.108:0140:02bc:err:vkd3d-proton:vkd3d_wait_for_gpu_timeline_semaphore: Failed to wait for Vulkan timeline semaphore, vr -4.
1195.108:0140:02bc:warn:vkd3d-proton:d3d12_device_mark_as_removed: Device 0000000021fe0080 is lost (reason 0x887a0005, "VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST").

in the end.

No help huh? Ive wasted 8 hours trying to get the VRAM to stop maxing out at 8GB on my 3070 ti. I have to go all lowest at 1080p to make it last at least an hour. Even respectable settings wont last 1 minute in the city before going from 120fps to 25. My only cure was to dualboot windows where the game runs like a dream and never chokes.
