Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: DOOM: The Dark Ages
  • Steam AppID of the game: 3017860

System Information

  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT
  • Video driver version: Mesa 26.0.4 (RADV)
  • Kernel version: (output of uname -r)
  • Proton version: Tested Proton 10.0-4, Proton Experimental, GE-Proton 10-34

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this exact issue
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available

Symptoms

Game launches successfully and displays the title screen.

When pressing "Space" to proceed to the main menu, the game freezes immediately:

  • No further rendering
  • No recovery
  • Requires force quit

This occurs consistently.

Reproduction

  1. Launch game via Steam using Proton
  2. Wait for title screen
  3. Press Space to continue
  4. Freeze occurs immediately

Additional Information / Testing Performed

  • Issue occurs on:

    • Wayland (KDE Plasma)
    • X11 (Plasma)
  • Tested multiple Proton versions:

    • Proton 10
    • Proton Experimental
    • GE-Proton 10-34
      → No change in behaviour
  • Tested Vulkan drivers:

    • RADV (default)
    • AMDVLK
      → No change
  • Tested launch options (individually):

    • RADV_DEBUG=nodcc
    • RADV_PERFTEST=aco
    • VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11
    • VKD3D_FEATURE_LEVEL=12_0
      → No effect
  • Deleted Proton prefix (compatdata) and shader cache
    → No effect

  • Other Vulkan and Proton titles work normally on this system

Notes

  • Game reportedly worked previously on an earlier Mesa version
  • Issue appears after updating to Mesa 26.x / LLVM 22
  • Behaviour suggests possible regression in DX12 → Vulkan path (VKD3D/RADV interaction)

Post a Proton log. But if it regressed with a Mesa update it is probably better to make an issue there.

This game doesn't even use d3d12, it's native vulkan.
