Bug description

Originally reported on ValveSoftware/Proton and then on Funcom forums and their Help center.

The game crashes with a "out of video memory trying to allocate a rendering resource." error when loading a game, either while the progress bar is visible (compiling shaders or loading), or a second or two after starting to render the 3D world. It also crashes if I set every graphic settings to the lowest and a low windowed resolution from the main menu, load the game then change the settings to anything from 1920x1080 with lowest settings and above.

Additional information

My screen is ultrawide 5760x1080 (3x 1920x1080). I know it consumes more VRAM, but the game was working fine before the update to unreal 5.8.2 and that is the only game that has such an issue (maybe it's the only UE 5.8 game I have tried yet).

The Nvidia Settings applet shows that the Used Dedicated Memory rises to ~95% when the message appears, so it's really consuming the VRAM. I could not free enough VRAM to get the issue to disappear (with just the Gnome desktop and Steam running before the game). I tried to set a lower VRAM amount with dxgi.maxDeviceMemory in dxvk.conf, to see if the game would stop consuming VRAM at a lower value (offset from the limit), but it keeps crashing at 95% used memory.

On ProtonDB, someone else seems to be affected by the same issue, though that person is able to somewhat play before the crash occurs while I'm not. That may be because my resolution is still ultrawide when playing in a window and the Gnome desktop consumes more than on an actual 1920x1080 screen, but then, having the game crash after 20 minutes of play is not ideal either.

I found something related on the Unreal Engine Developer forum that points to a UE 5.8 bug, but I don't know if that is what happens with this game.
Edit: Note that my bug title is wrong, the game was updated to UE 5.8.2, not 5.8.3, so if there is a bug in UE that got fixed in 5.8.3, the fix may not have reached the game yet.

I've seen some people blaming Nvidia for the lack of shared memory support on Linux that makes application crash instead of falling back to system RAM, but Nvidia says the driver can use shared memory on Linux if the application allows/request it. The proton log shows that the failure appear when vkd3d_allocate_device_memory fails to allocate device memory. I'm not familiar enough with vkd3d-proton to tell if the game asked for shared memory and vkd3d failed to deliver, or for too much dedicated memory and vkd3d error is valid.

I still don't know what is failing: The game, unreal engine, Proton, vkd3d or the driver, that's why I report the issue at multiple places, in hope of getting some insight from more experienced people.

Software information

  • Conan Exiles Enhanced on Steam, after patch 2.2.0 (updated to Unreal Engine 5.8.2 from an earlier UE5 version).
  • Occurs with any preset when resolution is 1920x1080 or greater, may not occur with a resolution of 1680x1050 with 'low' settings but I just loaded a game and did no extended play (and that's not acceptable to me anyway);

System information

  • GPU: NVidia GeForce RTX 2070 with 8GB VRAM
  • Driver: nvidia proprietary 595.* up to latest 595.104.02
  • Wine version: automatic proton selected by Steam (proton 9 and earlier can't run the game anymore).
  • VKD3D-Proton version: The one shipped with the proton version used by Steam, then I tried a manual install of 3.0.1 without any effect on the issue.

Log files

Attached is proton log with VKD3D_DEBUG=trace on VKD3D-Proton version 3.0.1:
steam-440900.zip 3.3MB (78MB uncompressed)

An earlier proton log with the default vkd3d-proton shipped by Steam and unset VKD3D_DEBUG 3.1MB (68MB uncompressed) is also available from my ValveSoftware/Proton comment.

Hello,

I tried the workaround found in this UE 5.8 bug “out of video memory” on the Unreal Engine Developers forum, but it had no effect on my issue.

Regards.
