Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: The Blood of Dawnwalker
  • Steam AppID of the game: 3751260

System Information

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090
  • Video driver version: NVIDIA 610.57.04
  • Kernel version: 7.2.2-arch1-1
  • Link to full system information report as Gist
  • Proton version: Proton Experimental (experimental-11.0-20260826)

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The game experiences brief but severe recurring freezes during gameplay and
in-game cinematics. Each freeze lasts less than half a second and occurs every
few seconds, making normal movement and combat difficult and the game
effectively unplayable.

The issue also occurs with the latest official Proton Experimental build.
Custom Proton builds were tested as well and exhibited the same behavior.

Reproduction

  1. Select Proton Experimental in the game's Steam compatibility settings.
  2. Set the launch options to PROTON_LOG=1 %command%.
  3. Launch the game.
  4. Start or load a game.
  5. Play normally or watch an in-game cinematic.
  6. Observe brief freezes recurring every few seconds.

Hello, I just wanted to share my crash report for this game in case it's useful.

System

  • Distro: CachyOS
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT
  • Driver: radv 26.2.2
  • Window manager: KWin (Wayland)
  • Display mode: Fullscreen
  • Kernel: Linux 7.2.3-1-cachyos
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X

Proton versions tested

  • proton-cachyos-11.0-20260703 : Crashes within ~2 hours. Full system lockup (keyboard including Caps Lock becomes unresponsive).

  • Proton Experimental: (experimental-11.0-20260903c-x86_64) : More stable (6+ hours). Desktop recovers after crash, but Steam and Discord also crash.

Crash behaviour

  • Unreal Engine crash context reports:
    • CrashType: GPUCrash
    • ErrorMessage: GPU Crash dump Triggered
    • Crashed thread: RHIInterruptThread
  • Appears linked to UI state changes (multiple crashes when entering or exiting combat).
  • Device recreation is observed shortly before the crash (sometimes appears to happen more than once), followed by the final GPU crash.
  • Proton log shows DGXI "Unknown interface query" messages and ends with X connection to :0 broken.

Happy to provide any logs or test workarounds.

@brettthehood Hi there and thank you for the report.
A Proton log from a crash on Experimental would be good if you could get one yes (proton-cachyos isn't supported on this issue tracker)

Here's the truncated Proton experimental log. This crash happened after about 30 minutes while in a cutscene.

using the mod Ultimate Engine Tweaks fixed a lot of performance issues for me

Can confirm the exact same crash on my end.

  • Distro: CachyOS
  • GPU: RTX 4060m
  • Driver version: NVIDIA 615.71.09

Reproducible GPU hang (NVIDIA Xid 109 CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT) in one map area

Summary

The game hangs the GPU and dies with an Unreal GPU crash whenever I load a save inside one area of the
open world. The kernel logs NVRM: Xid 109 ... name=GameThread ... errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT each time.
Elsewhere the game runs for hours without a problem. The hang reproduces on three Proton builds, with
VKD3D_CONFIG=single_queue and nodxr, and at every graphics preset from High down to all Low.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Load a save inside the area (Unreal PlayerLocation roughly X 123000 to 131500, Y 370000 to 391000).
  2. Play or stand still for 20 to 160 seconds.
  3. The picture freezes, then the game closes with the Unreal crash reporter ("GPU Crash dump Triggered").

In my last 11 loads inside the area, all 11 hung, the fastest 30 seconds after launch. The same session
that first reached the area had played 23 minutes cleanly on the way there.

What the hang looks like

Logged at 1 Hz with nvidia-smi: GPU utilisation pinned at 100% while board power drops from about 220 W to
about 71 W for roughly 4 seconds, then the Xid:

NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:01:00): 109, pid=..., name=GameThread, channel 0x0000001f, errorString CTX SWITCH TIMEOUT, Info 0x22c01d

Unreal CrashContext for every one: CrashType GPUCrash, ErrorMessage GPU Crash dump Triggered,
Platform.AppHasFocus true, DRED and Aftermath off. Temperatures stay around 65 C, no thermal throttling,
no PCIe errors.

12 of the 16 are inside the area above. The two on 28 September were 26 m apart in a second area.

What I tried (all still hang)

Change Result
Proton Experimental (experimental-11.0-20260924) hang
GE-Proton11-7 hang
Proton Hotfix (hotfix-20260828) hang
VKD3D_CONFIG=single_queue hang
VKD3D_CONFIG=nodxr hang
Light and Reflections quality Medium hang
All 14 quality settings Low hang
120 fps cap, 62 fps cap, VSync off, frame generation off hang

Proton 10 is not offered in my Steam client's compatibility list, so I could not test it.

System

  • Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS, kernel 7.0.0-34-generic, GNOME 50.1 on Wayland, Xwayland 24.1.10
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti (Blackwell), driver 595.91.07, open kernel modules
  • Steam from the Ubuntu snap
  • Game build 25232147, DirectX 12 path (pipeline cache PCD3D_SM6), DLSS on

I have a full PROTON_LOG=1 log of a crash at the area on Proton Experimental
(experimental-11.0-20260924); vkd3d-proton reports VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST at the hang. I can also share a save inside the area, the Unreal crash dumps, the full Steam system information, or a run with
VKD3D_CONFIG=breadcrumbs PROTON_LOG=1 if that helps.

@rronima hi there. Can you share the save game from the troubled area?

Also in general just always attach a Proton log
