Symptoms

HITMAN World of Assassination intermittently freezes or crashes .

There are two distinct failure modes:

  • Crash during gameplay. While playing normally, the game can suddenly crash and display a popup containing: "Read error, Please verify your game cache." This can happen on different maps and is not limited to a specific mission.
  • Freeze when restarting a mission: When selecting "Restart", the game can freeze during the restart/loading process. In this case, the game does not display the "Read error" popup. It can simply remain frozen while attempting to restart the mission.

Both issues are intermittent.

Steam's file verification reports no corrupted or missing files.

Reproduction

Crash during gameplay

  • Launch HITMAN World of Assassination
  • Start a mission (often Miami in my tests)
  • Play normally
  • The game may eventually crash and display the "Read error, Please verify your game cache" popup

Freeze when restarting

  • Launch HITMAN World of Assassination
  • Start a mission
  • Select "Restart"
  • The game may freeze during the restart/loading process

Troubleshooting performed

  • Steam game file verification completed successfully with no errors
  • Recreated the HITMAN Proton prefix
  • Removed the Steam shader cache for AppID 1659040
  • Tested with Proton Experimental and 11.0-2
  • Tested DirectX 11 with -dx11
  • Disabled VSync
  • Disabled ray tracingg
  • Tested AMD FSR 2 enabled and disabled
  • The issue persists across multiple maps

Hello @bastientauran, we're using one issue report per unofficially supported game title, so I've gone ahead and transferred this issue report to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/5536#issuecomment-5654752837.
