Proton log: steam-2638890-crash-2026-10-02.log.gz

Symptoms

The game closes to the desktop without any error message after 7 to 30 minutes of normal gameplay. It has happened in 5 out of 6 sessions.

The Proton log shows EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW in a game thread. Every frame of the backtrace is inside OnimushaWotS.exe:

9367.551:013c:0214:trace:seh:dispatch_exception code=c00000fd (EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW) flags=0 addr=0000000144834A15

The backtrace is only 7 game frames deep, so it does not look like runaway recursion.

Right after that the game starts its own CrashReport.exe (a .NET/WPF program), which fails under Wine with an unhandled 0xe0434352 exception in System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterLib.CounterExists, called from CrashReport.App.GetParentMainWindowTitle(). Because of that no crash dialog is shown and the game just disappears.

Before the crash the log also has 963 handled EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION exceptions, all at the same address 0000000001F20C4F (outside the game module), about one every 1.5 seconds for the whole session. They do not look fatal, but I mention them in case they are related.

What I have ruled out

  • No kernel messages at crash time: no amdgpu reset, no ring timeout, no OOM, no MCE.
  • Temperatures normal at the moment of every crash (CPU 73-79 °C, GPU 54 °C, hotspot 70 °C).
  • RAM use about 11 of 32 GB.
  • Happens with CPU Curve Optimizer disabled and enabled, and with stock boost.
  • Happens with Proton Experimental and Proton 11.0-2.
  • Happens with and without: frame generation, FSR upscaling, FPS cap (164), V-Sync, MangoHud, gamemode.
  • Happens with and without the launch argument /WineDetectionEnabled:False.
  • kernel.split_lock_mitigate=0 is set.
  • Other games (Counter-Strike 2, Divinity: Original Sin 2) run for hours on the same system without problems.

Reproduction

  1. Launch options: PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
  2. Start the game, load a save and play normally (exploring and combat).
  3. After 7 to 30 minutes the game closes to the desktop.

Game settings: 2560x1440 borderless, DirectX 12, custom preset (mostly High), ray tracing off, native resolution with TAA, FPS limit 164.

Update: this turned out to be a hardware problem on my side, not a Proton or game bug. Sorry for the noise.

The crashes stopped after I disabled the EXPO memory profile in the BIOS (Corsair CMK32GX5M2E6000Z36, 2x16 GB DDR5-6000 CL36 on an ASRock B850I Lightning WiFi, BIOS 4.43). With the RAM at the JEDEC default (4800 MT/s):

  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword ran for 44 minutes with no crash (before: crashed in 5 of 6 sessions, after 7 to 29 minutes).
  • Monster Hunter Wilds (same engine) ran for 35 minutes with no crash (before: crashed after 15 to 19 minutes).
  • No fatal exceptions in the Proton log, and the game's CrashReport.exe never started.

So the EXCEPTION_STACK_OVERFLOW and the silent exits were most likely caused by memory errors at the EXPO setting. Other games (Counter-Strike 2, Divinity: Original Sin 2) did not show the problem, which is why I wrongly ruled out hardware in the report.

One thing from the report that may still be worth a look independently: when the game does crash, its CrashReport.exe (.NET/WPF) fails under Wine with an unhandled 0xe0434352 exception in System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterLib.CounterExists, so no crash dialog is shown.

Closing this issue.
