Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Haunted
  • Steam AppID of the game: 260550

System Information

  • GPU: RX 6600
  • Video driver version: 25.2.8-0ubuntu0.24.04.4
  • Kernel version: 7.0.0-38-generic
  • Link to full system information report as Gist: ...?
  • Proton version: Proton 11.0-2

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

With Proton 11.0-2, moving the mouse whenever the pointer is visible on-screen (the first opportunity being the main menu) causes stuttering that drops the frame rate significantly.

To capture the attached Proton log, I just moved the mouse around on the menu before closing the game.

However, this also happens during gameplay, as seen in the following cropped and labelled screenshot of the MangoHud overlay.

The fact that I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition which defaults to X11 might be relevant. I have not tried the game in a Wayland session.

This stuttering does not occur with Proton 10.0-4.

Note that the game also failed to launch, and showed an error pop-up, one of the times I tried to run it with Proton 11.0-2, but it only happened once and I didn't get a screenshot of the error. I've launched it several times and it hasn't happened again.

Reproduction

  1. Run the game with Proton 11.0-2 in an X11 session, preferably with some frame-rate monitor (e.g. MangoHud) enabled.
  2. Wait for the main menu.
  3. Move the mouse.

The fact that I'm using Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition which defaults to X11 might be relevant.

I think I've just confirmed this. I tried running the game in a Sway session (because Cinnamon on Wayland is still experimental), and moving the mouse on the menu did not seem to affect the frame rate.

So in summary, it looks like this stuttering occurs only with Proton 11.0-2 (though I've only tried Proton 10.0-4 as an alternative) and only on X11 (though again I've only tried Cinnamon for X11 and Sway for Wayland).

Just for good measure, I tried also Proton Experimental (exact version shown by MangoHud overlay in cropped screenshot below), and I see the same mouse-movement-induced stuttering as with Proton 11.0-2.

@michaelneverwins 2 questions:

  1. Do you have Variable Refresh Rate enabled anywhere?
  2. Have you updated recently?

I was able to repro until updating earlier today (which happened to be a long process culminating in fixing a broken Xorg config, but I digress). Nobody else has been able to reproduce the issue afaict.

Do you have Variable Refresh Rate enabled anywhere?

Yes. I hadn't thought of it, because I so often just leave my display in 60 Hz mode and run games at 60 FPS anyway, but in fact the one and only manual tweak to my X11 configuration (as far as I can remember) is the following in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/11-amdgpu.conf:

Section "Device"
	Identifier "AMD"
	Driver "amdgpu"
	Option "TearFree" "true"
	Option "DRI" "3"
	Option "VariableRefresh" "true"
EndSection

Note also that TearFree is enabled there.

However, I'm not sure it's relevant. After removing that file and rebooting my system, the result is the same: stuttering with Proton 11.0-2 and not with Proton 10.0-4. So now I can answer your question again:

Do you have Variable Refresh Rate enabled anywhere?

No :)

Have you updated recently?

I believe I had installed the latest system updates prior to opening this issue, and I did so again before the re-testing described above. But this is Linux Mint 22.3, so those were mostly security updates and I likely don't have whatever broke your Xorg configuration.
