Menus work, when starting or joining the game the game will load but once at the character selection screen the game will close. The game is actually loading something changing graphical settings changes the amount of time needed to complete the loading process.
3.7-6 Beta still the same issue.
This appears to be working now with Proton 3.16-4 Beta. I can start a solo match, start a listening server, and connect to multiplayer games via the server browsers that are not secured with VAC. When connecting to a VAC secured server I get an error message about making sure the game is up to date. I will likely put in a new issue on this once I have enough time to fully test everything out. I've only done simple testing and not played long enough to fully evaluate it yet.

Game seems fine but when you start a solo game server it crashes in the character selection (which I guess the game was initialized properly), didn't test multiplayer. No workarounds used just plain download, install and start.
