I found a workaround for Mirror's Edge:
Modifying the file steamapps/compatdata/17410/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/My Documents/EA Games/Mirror's Edge/TdGame/Config/TdEngine.ini so that the keys ResX and ResY have the native resolution allows the game to run without problems :tada: . In my case ResX was set to 800 and ResY to 600, which i changed to 1920 and 1200 respectively.
Another Unreal Engine 3, Quantum Conundrum set the abovementioned ResX and ResY values to 1920 and 1080, allowing the game to start without issues (however, lot's of textures are missing when actually playing the game)
Another workaround for similar issue (when i ran the witcher EE) was to enable virtual desktop first time, configure correct res, then disable virtual desktop again. Used my local winecfg with the proton prefix to fo it.
@tingvarsson care to share specific steps? that seems to be a more generic way to work around the problem for any kind of game. Cheers!
You find your prefixes and run winecfg like mentioned here #24
If you haven't done that with wine before (which you need installed ofc) it has a tab for Graphics in which you can specify that it should use a virtual desktop for all programs run in that prefix.
I actually don't think it is a nice way to have to do that manually. It is also possible to run individual commands with a virtual desktop, as mentioned here. Not sure if proton has support for it enabled, did a quick attempt to get it into the launch option for a game but didn't get it to work.
Borderlands minimized itself on me when it started. After it finished loading, I maximized it and it seemed to be fine.
I have the same issue with M.A.S.S Builder Demo.

Borderlands, Mirror's Edge and Unreal Tournament 3 Black Edition display a black screen when started for the first time.
Starting Borderlands and Unreal Tournament with launch option
-windowed(windowed mode), selecting the native resolution and then starting the game again without the-windowedoption allows the games to run full screen without further issue.Mirror's Edge does not accept the
-windowedoption (or similar options i found online), but the intros can be heard, as well as interaction with UI elements using the keyboard.System information from steam
