Looks like the game is buggy in the same way that GLQuake is. Basically it can't handle the long string of GL extensions that modern GPUs support. Looking at the Steam Community Discussion pages shows lots of crashes on Windows, too.
Oh, didn't know that. So this one is more a game's issue than a Proton implementation issue. Never tried it on windows.
It probably requires MESA_GL_VERSION_OVERRIDE=2003 or an even older year. These overrides should probably be set in the drirc files for Mesa.
Though I'm curious if your system is properly set up to run 32bit apps, considering errors like this:
40780.106:0024:0025:warn:module:load_builtin_dll failed to load .so lib for builtin L"Z:\home\steam\.local\share\Steam\steamapps\common\Quake 2\ref_gl.dll": /home/steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2320/pfx/dosdevices/z:/home/steam/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Quake 2/ref_gl.dll: invalid ELF header
@whizse That warning is harmless.
@aeikum Good to know, thanks!
It should be prepared to run all Steam codes and mods 'cause is a SteamOS Brewmaster with little to any modifications... Only a soft RAID in disks that "has no contact" with Steam itself and a Plex server that use that RAID.
I hope that in the short time will arrive updates with more current version of Mesa to SteamOS :)
__GL_ExtensionStringVersion=17700 %command% for NVIDIA drivers
or
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2003 %command% for AMD/Intel
& Quake 2 runs with no trouble, the addons pop the message "Application load error 5:0000065434"
The latest Proton has fixed the Quake 2 addons, they both now work.
Ok, I confirm that by adding
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2003 %command%
as launch parameter the game runs fine on my SteamOS system. I'll later check if the this applies to my MX Linux system too.
Thanks @lucifertdark and @whizse for the hints :)
PLease turn this command ON by default for all users for Quake 2. It is easy
MESA_EXTENSION_MAX_YEAR=2003 %command%
works thanks
Hello. With Proton 3.16-7, you can now use the PROTON_OLD_GL_STRING runtime option instead of the Mesa- or Nvidia-specific environment variables.
This issue is still happening for me with Proton 4.2
Hello @dylanmtaylor, this game needing a shortened opengl extension string on modern hardware isn't going to change with newer Proton versions.
As noted by aeikum, adding PROTON_OLD_GL_STRING=1 %command% to the game's launch options should avoid that issue.
Works without setting anything now on current proton, but only seems to run in a window.
With the new remaster update, single core CPU usage randomly spikes to 100% across different cores causing higher power wattage on both Proton 8.0-3 and the current version of Proton Experimental as of 8/11/2023. This issue does not happen on Proton 7.0. Performance is unaffected and the game is playable regardless, but battery life is noticeably worse because of this issue hovering around 13-14 watts unless you change to Proton 7.0, which generally hovers around 8-9 watts.
Here's Proton logs running the game both with 8.0 and 7.0, loading up to the first level.
Proton 8.0-3: steam-2320.log
Proton 7.0-6: steam-2320.log
Launch the game (not the Original launch option, but the new remaster from Nightdive) and reach the main menu. CPU usage spiking starts as soon as the splash videos are finished and the main menu is opened.

I get a simple "check crashlog.txt error and game kills off. also attached.
Load game on any proton version, on either GPU, same results.
@CptCookies12 Thank you so much for the detailed report! We will investigate this and see if we can improve the 8.0-x perf to match 7.0-x.

try to run and dont run
Hello @tojestzart, skimming over your Proton log, there's a bunch of lines like err:module:import_dll Library SHELL32.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\media\\lsd\\362CBBA642F61AA6\\SteamLibrary\\steamapps\\common\\Quake 2\\rerelease\\quake2ex_steam.exe") not found which hints that the game's wineprefix is damaged or incomplete.
thanks for looking on it, it might be case because im mounting manually extra partition and it has everytime different numbers such as 362CBBA642F61AA6 then i add that partition in storage settings in steam. maybe thats why?, but other games works on that mounted partition

looks same with errors when i tried to run it today
exactly same same error after integrity check Steam linux runtime 3.0 (sniper), proton experimental, game itself

NOTE: There are a fairly amount of games working fine in this system (less than in my other system with MX Linux but still). All my current tests in SteamOS.
