But FPS is unacceptable.

Started to work for me with Proton 3.16-4
The performance in the main menu is horrible, almost impossible to navigate (even with esync off)
The game runs in 4k with 7 FPS on all settings (no difference between low and ultra)
System specs: https://gist.github.com/vanyasem/f787469ec8c50cdd3728340ef4c73269
tried again in 3.16-4, seems to fail with a very similar log. only error not related to steamoverlay or shutdown seems to be:
20641.547:0025:0026:err:winediag:SECUR32_initNTLMSP ntlm_auth was not found or is outdated. Make sure that ntlm_auth >= 3.0.25 is in your path. Usually, you can find it in the winbind package of your distribution.
same computer, same video drivers as original post
Tried again in ubuntu 18.04 and proton 3.16-6, still doesn't start up, I suspect that the errors haven't changed but I think the error from my last comment was a red herring - the lines before the first ShutdownThread() seem to relate to nvapi64.dll failing to load

But on Fedora Rawhide it already not needed because this patch already applied in shipped XServer.
so that xserver patch thing was an obvious red herring (it might have messed with AoM on your system detecting presence of an nvidia card, thus not loading nvapi maybe?), but what actually helped "run" (more like crawl) it (on proton 3.16 beta) was copying over the (missing) nvapi libs from a lutris-installed tkg wine:
cp /home/kyra/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/tkg-4.0-x86_64/lib64/wine/nvapi64.dll.so /home/kyra/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 3.16\ Beta/dist/lib64/wine/
cp /home/kyra/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/tkg-4.0-x86_64/lib/wine/nvapi.dll.so /home/kyra/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton\ 3.16\ Beta/dist/lib/wine/
now we just have the issue of horrible FPS (ingame + in the main menu, not in cutscenes or pause menu, no matter the hardware power or graphics settings), but according to the log spamming the following 2 lines like crazy (i didn't specifically measure but feels like at least once per frame), i'm pretty sure that's the culprit:
3198701.523:0024:002e:fixme:nvapi:unimplemented_stub function 0x2216a357 is unimplemented!
3198701.980:0024:002e:fixme:nvapi:unimplemented_stub function 0x65b93ca8 is unimplemented!
according to ids looked up on https://github.com/falahati/NvAPIWrapper/blob/master/NvAPIWrapper/Native/Helpers/FunctionId.cs these functions are:
which is some driver hinting magic to allow thread-unsafe parallel access to vram buffers if i understand it right.
EDIT: this seems related https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=43441, but nothing happened there for ages.
@nonchip What about running with an AMD card? In theory, it shouldn't try loading nvapi with an AMD card.
@qsniyg well while that's technically a possibility i'm afraid it doesn't work for me for 3 reasons: i'd have to a) buy[^1] an b) AMD card that c) doesn't suck (on (non-ubuntu flavours of) linux), so no thanks, i prefer the "let's ask someone who knows what those 2 functions do" method :P
the other question is can I somehow fake being on an AMD card? i think DXVK had some setting for that some time ago but it might've been removed? also no idea if it really was doing what i imagine, something about "report this pci id instead of the actual one", iirc. might also not work if they did any fancy shader optimization or similar (which they probably did, if they load vendor specific APIs).
the other alternative would be to manually patch out the conditional load logic in the exe file, but that just seems wrong on so many levels.
[^1]: also, just outta curiosity: how rich does one have to be to say that without feeling ashamed of oneself? :P
Tested with an AMD GPU (5700XT), and it has the same performance issue. I've filed a bug report to wine here: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48901
It seems to be some kind of lock or sleep-related issue, as the CPU or GPU usage isn't particularly high, and the frametime doubles (and the framerate halves) when uncapping the frame rate in the settings (changing 60fps to uncapped).
Can OP (@Cuddlypuff) or an admin rename this issue? Thanks !
The current status here, is that the game is running, but has a clocked 100% GPU usage and framerate issue because of it.
The game is clocking at the maximum power and usage of my GPU, regardless of the game quality settings, where it shouldn't be. As a result, the game struggles to produce a stable framerate and is producing something between ~20-45 FPS on average at any point in a level (In the main Mayhem lobby or in the open-world of Seoul)
Launch the game with Steam Play activated. It will choose the latest stable Proton version by default. Here, 8.0-2 at the time of writing.

Symptoms
Game fails to start, no error message.
Before shutdown, the log seems to indicate issues with OpenVR and nvapi64.dll.
