Symptoms

The game launches fine, you can access all parts of the menu perfectly. Once you start a new game, it will crash during the first loading screen with a vc redist error of some sort. The exact same issue has gone unfixed by people on wine for a year or so: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=42368

@KorinFlakes Someone posted on ProtonDB:

Requires wininet installation via protontricks 261760 wininet to fix the crash(reported by others) when starting the game.

I used winetricks to install wininet. This fixed starting a new game. I had no other issues with the game.

Symptoms

The game starts as it should from Steam with Proton 5.0-7 and a few other Proton versions I've tried, and the menu displays perfectly fine with no glitches, but when I go to load or start a new game, it crashes, displaying the error messages as included in the screenshots. I read on ProtonDB that the problem is due to wininet being missing, and that installing wininet using protontricks solved the problem for a few people, so I tried just that, but to no avail. I am really unsure about why this game refuses to load properly when all others apart from Red Dead 2 and, at first, Call of Cthulhu, have worked without any issues at all. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Reproduction

I also experience the bug originally described by ConnorA3. I have tried using several versions of Proton (including 3.16-9, 4.11-13, and 5.0-9), running protontricks 261760 wininet after changing Proton versions. In all tested cases, the game would crash with a "pure virtual function call" message after attempting to start a new game (the crash occurs after a short loading screen).

This is a truncated steam-261760.log file. The original was too long to successfully upload as a gist (it was over 500k lines and almost 57 MB), hence the attachment of the first 3000 lines of that file. Note that I ended the process associated with Lichdom: Battlemage around line 2710 of the log (the "retrying (60 sec)" lines), since by that point of the log file, the crash had already happened.

...So... I'm not exactly sure what I was doing wrong the last time I tried to get this game running on Steam, but it appears that I messed something up. I was able to get the game running (past the prior point of crashing on starting a new save file):

  • moving the ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/compdata/261760 directory elsewhere
  • running and closing Lichdom: Battlemage in order to recreate the moved directory
  • running protontricks 261760 wininet on the newly created directory

Hopefully, this helps anybody who ends up facing the same kind of issue I was.
