it's weird that the workaround for this doesn't work for the latest proton but only for proton 6?

Hello @Haxorzz, what workaround are you referring to?

Regardless, the info on this compatibility report is quite outdated and a fresh Proton log (without any workarounds applied) might be interesting to ponder.

HHaxorzz 2023-04-07 github

It's a pretty old workaround: You launch the game in proton 4.11-13 (this gets the prefixes made) and then close it, use winetricks to install XNA 40 then launch the game with proton 6.3-8 (works best for me) and the launch option "PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%". This makes the game basically completely functional except for occasional major graphical glitches (screenshots, gamescope scaling, or anything related to the game window will cause instability)

BBlisto91 2023-04-13 github

@Haxorzz Do you still need PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 with the latest Proton versions?

HHaxorzz 2023-04-14 github

@Blisto91 I've never not tried win wined3d and everyone seems to still be using it with newer version but I can test it if you want

Right now game launches without any workarounds (Proton 9.0-2) , but in level "W 2-1" , snow particles starting to move at low frame rate after 20-30 seconds of gameplay . Also , if you get to the "W 2-2" right after "W 2-1" , game will become entirely black . Launching with Proton Experimental doesn't help , nor do using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 .

that's actually fantastic news! When did they fix xna games?

Ppinksquare 2024-06-28 github

@Haxorzz can't say for sure . I vaguely remember reading proton changelog , that mentioned "Fix for xna games" or "fix for Bloody Trapland" specifically .

HHaxorzz 2026-08-10 github

Outside of instability issues or lack of CD-Key paste functionality with the steam game mode keyboard, it appears this game works with no further setup in the current proton experimental.
Instability like crashes (I had a few constant crashes after world 2 although very sporadic) and artifacts (snow/rain particles having the wrong timescale and freezing) this game does indeed work with no winetricks!
