Reproduction

I installed the game like any other and didn't mess with any files.

Work around: PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1

Sszymex73 2019-01-05 github

This didn't work. Tried with and without %command% after PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 and with/without additional PROTON_LOG=1.

Forgot to mention, I was using proton-3.16.

Sszymex73 2019-01-06 github

I forced steam to use Proton-3.16-4 and it still wouldn't let me through

I will try with 16-6 beta

Sszymex73 2019-01-06 github

Proton-3.16-6 beta also doesn't work for me

And execute the following command fixed crash for me.
reg add "HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D" /v VideoPciDeviceID /t REG_DWORD /d 0x402 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Wine\Direct3D" /v VideoPciVendorID /t REG_DWORD /d 0x10de /f

I don't have the compatibilitytools.d directory in my steam dir so I used steamapps/common/Proton 3.16 Beta that is currently selected in the settings
I executed the registry commands but still, I can't get through. I tried directly executing the Falout3.exe file that way but it gives me Application load error 5:0000065434

log from the direct execution

Hello @kisak-valve can you please add tag "regression"? Game was working fine for me with Proton 4.11 but it stopped working after Proton 5.0 - now game stuck at black screen after startup. I will attach the working and non-working logs.

Symptoms

The game does not launch (shows Fallout 3 launcher for a moment and quickly disappears) with Proton 5.13 but does launch with Proton 4.11 (see the attached logs). The game does not start with Proton 5.0 either.

I bypassed d3d9.dll, as described here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYtX_NCDMe0

There is a similar issue, however, it's (1) for Fallout 3 GOTY and (2) outdated Proton version.

Hi i can't run Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition with proton 6.0 GE-1, 6.1 GE-2, 6.4 GE-2
( compatibily tool configuration failed )

with PROTON_LOG=1 %command%
nobody log in my home

But work well with Proton 5.0.9 with this xlive.dll

installed xlive.dll directly to ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/22370/pfx/drive_c/windows/syswow64

bye

The game installs and loads correctly once you replace the xlive.dll but starting a new game cause the game to freeze displaying the VATS screen, the happens when the opening cinematic should play.

Tried all versions of Proton available including Experimental.

However loading an exiting save works fine.

Is there much of a point in this issue compared to #370?

OOilFreak 2025-06-12 github

To summarize the above mention, a limitation of this games engine is that it crashes on Windows when focus is lost. Previously Proton didn't suffer from this, but it seems that a recent Proton update made it more accurate by now crashing.

Mmirh 2025-06-12 github

Can you try this set this parameter in the game properties?

DXVK_CONFIG="d3d9.deviceLossOnFocusLoss = True"
OOilFreak 2025-06-17 github

That does not make a difference unfortunatley
