The most recent versions of Proton do not work... use 4.2-9 as above or try other older versions if necessary. I suspect this might be related to other comments I saw regarding requiring dx11 ( but not 12)?
Hello @JJones780, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, please copy the contents of Steam Runtime Diagnostics from Steam (Steam -> Help -> Steam Runtime Diagnostics) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.
There's several years between Proton 4.2 and the current release. Can you test what the newest Proton version that runs fine with the game and the oldest that has trouble?

Newest workingVR 4.2-9 ( with -dx11 option)
Next version that I have handy is 4.11-13 and it fails completely there ( with or without -dx11).
The current Proton Experimental can't bring up the VR - shows on monitor instead ( with or without -dx11).
Note: selected SteamVR run each time.
