It is much better and seems to be nearly good for whitelisting, but it is missing the loading screen video with music and you wouldn't know that with VR since that doesn't have the video last time I checked.
So not quite on par with Windows but much better than it was.

Thanks to FAudio since Proton 3.16-5 audio levels are now correct, except one occurrence in a cave where a spike is coming out of the ceiling, audio is cutting out for a moment. Sounds like clipping.
My impression was that the performance in VR was better in 3.16-5, but it's still playable very well with 3.16-6. Haven't completed the game yet, but played for ~7h with Proton in VR.
