Log: steam-55230.log

Symptoms

Trying to play game forcing Steam Play with new update, since Linux version can't do LAN and has graphics issues.

game_launcher.exe loads just fine. Selecting either the Direct X10 & 11 option or the Direct X9 option leads to game not launching. Steam detects the game as running, but no window is created, and game eventually closes.

Reproduction

Trying to bypass launcher by renaming game files didn't work, game still didn't launch.

Disabling Esync didn't work, using Wine D3D11 didn't work, disabling
d3d11 didn't work for Direct X9 version.

In my case i got it working but with AMD rx550/ llvm 7.0.1 mesa 18.2.8 and amdgpu 18.1.0.
But i can't progress further than Free Fall mission due to character being stuck in air.

Nvm, verified integrity and redownloaded and everything works fine, also i'm playing it from ntfs partition so it might have other issues.

I just realized i was playing linux port all this time, so i checked Steam play in propetries and now i have same issue as op. Tried using "PROTON_USE_WINED3D": "1" and "PROTON_NO_D3D11": "1" with no results. (Tried both Dx10-11 and Dx9

Still unable to get this to work but I have more information:

I tried installing steam into the wineprefix, linked common into WineSteam's steamapps and installed/discovered the game and ran it through that client. The game works, albeit with very poor performance (in the DX10/11 version), and decent performance (in the DX9 version) and random crashing. Adjusting fullscreen resolution also screws up my standard desktop resolution for some reason.

I'm not sure what I can do about sharing logs with WineSteam version. Based on another game's issue (Tales of Symphonia 372360), just the fact that it works under WineSteam is possibly a DRM issue.

Okay so because Computers are weird, I don't know what happened but whatever I had done the game is actually starting under Proton. Keyword is starting, as it gets past the logos and the autosave screen and then crashes just before getting into the main menu.

On the bright side, I now have a new log!

I was able to get this to launch with no issues, I will list the steps to prepare as if you already have the (nonworking) game installed:

  1. Go to the tools section of steam, locate proton experimental, right click > properties > betas > bleeding-edge
  2. Right click on Saints Row The Third > properties > Compatibility > force > proton experimental
  3. Right click on Saints Row The Third > properties > local files >verify integrity of game files (It should say it needs to redownload some)
  4. After download completes, play the game

Doing these steps I was able to launch and play the game in DX11 mode, didn't try it in DX9. It even pulled my windows cloud save and loaded it no problem. Just to make sure I flew around the city for a while, blew some stuff up, and started a cutscene, everything seemed fine. It did hang for a moment when I was traveling from one area to another, but I was in a very fast jet, so uncertain if that was an issue in the windows release as well.

❌ - Game Launches Fullscreen, but only after two windowed pop-ups, the first asking if you'd like to read the readme (?) and the second asking if you want to launch in DX9 or DX11 mode.
✅ - Cutscenes play with no issues
✅ - Game is able to take input from controller and keyboard and lets you swap between
✅ - Rumble feature works on controller
✅ - No visible graphical issues, no crashing or bugs during my test
✅ - Switches between Keyboard+Mouse and Gamepad Glyphs during gameplay, but only once you close and re-open a menu

This fixed the crash when exiting pause menu.
The game is now playable for me, the only problem i had is that the game freezed when trying to exit to desktop at the main menu.

Can anyone confirm me what I am about to write behaves the same on your computers too please?

I have booted Saints Row the Third and realized very quickly that the native version of the client is simply not working properly (missing music in the menu and the same stuttering issue I am going to describe soon). Running the Windows version through Proton Experimental and 8 instead doesn't have the same audio issue at all.

On the other hand I came to realize that it stutters for a solid 10 to 20 seconds every 5 to 10 seconds. Reading on ProtonDB it seems to be the case since they have shutdown the servers, so the game is actually in timeout waiting to connect to them failing and hence why the stutter.

[Regression] Saints Row The Third hanging for 20 seconds every 15 seconds

Symptoms

Saints Row The Third hangs up for 20 seconds, then it runs for 15 seconds and then it hangs up for 20 seconds again. This pattern repeats infinitely. The rhythm at which the game hangs up and runs is very constant. 20 seconds and 15 seconds.

Saints Row The Third used to work fine before the Proton Experimental update.

Reproduction

Run Saints Row The Third with Proton Experimental.

Hello @EyBmr, "used to work fine before the Proton Experimental update" is an ambiguous statement and ages poorly. Please explicitly note the most recent version of Proton you know is unaffected. For Proton Experimental, this should have a date (e.g. experimental-9.0-20240719 is your known regressed build version).

How do I retrieve the current Proton Experimental version and how do I retrieve the Proton Experimental version that was recent 6 days ago? Because 6 days ago I played Saints Row The Third with Proton Experimental and everything worked smoothly.

Broken again on Experimental it seems

Broken how?

Aalasky17 2026-07-02 github

@parkerlreed This game has CEG ... could you also try verifying the integrity of the game files? CEG will need you to re-verify the integrity of the game files if you "downgrade" to an older Proton version or mess with/delete the prefix. If the game is still broken, more detail on how would be great -- are there any Proton versions where it is still working?

Pparkerlreed 2026-07-03 github

Immediately closes after selecting DirectX 10/11 from the launcher.

I've tried 10.0 and Experimental with no luck as of yet. Verifying doesn't affect the outcome.

EDIT: Testing some more. It immediately closes on Proton 10. Proton 11/Experimental take about 30 seconds and then close out (goes from running to play in the client)

EDIT2: No luck on Proton 9 either. Immediate close after graphics selection.

This works after disabling SteamRT3. It seems old CEG breaks with the new 64 bit client.

Aalasky17 2026-07-06 github

@parkerlreed Thank you for narrowing down the issue to SteamRT3 (and thank you for beta testing :D) - I saw your comment on CoD: Modern Warfare 2 as well. We will investigate this - great issue to find while the SteamRT3 switch is still in beta :)
