Feature Request

I confirm:

  • [x ] that I haven't found another request for this feature.
  • [ ] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available that
    contain this feature already.

Description

Whilst performing some investigation for (https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2241) I noticed that the same proton version was installed per steam library, rather than only once. Ideally, I only want one copy of proton 3.16-6 (or whatever other proton version I'm using) on my system.

As a manual fix I deleted most the Proton installations but, kept the copies residing under ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/ as that's my SSD and I have a need for speed. Then, I made symbolic links for Proton 3.7-8 / 3.16-4 / 3.16-6 to my other steam libraries across my HHD's and SSHD.

Justification [optional]

I don't not have my system WINE installed on each of my hard drives, it's installed once on my SSD. Why should proton be installed multiple times?

Risks [optional]

Reduced disk space usage.

If they can build all compatibility into one version that's obviously the best way to go instead of making separate versions for each game.

I was originally going to say there are downsides but really the only downside would be that of regressions. At least with separate versions for each game you can limit one game to an old version while still moving the typical versions up without getting to fixing a regression.

Let's face it, regressions are going to happen and there's a mountain of stuff to do with Proton already that unless they heavily do regression testing and fix every regression found then some games may have problems for a while or for the rest of time because of not having separate versions for each game.

Oh, I don't mean only have one Proton installation. What I mean is that Proton 3.16-6 is installed on every steam library folder I have setup so, I have 3 copies of the same Proton 3.16-6 across multiple hard drives.

Proton 3.7-8, 3.16-4 & 3.16-6 should all be individual so that no future updates breaks compatibility with a previous Proton releases but, we only need one copy of each.

I agree! This definitely would be a great feature to have.
