Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues:Dark Souls III
  • Steam AppID of the game: 374320

System Information

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Using PROTON_LOG=1 %command% did not generate an additional log file for me.

Symptoms

Dark Souls III worked fine for about the last week for me. Today I updated steam and Arch, then found that Dark Souls III crashes on launch with error:
Cannot open assembly '~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/DARK SOULS III/Game/DarkSoulsIII.exe: File does not contain a valid CIL image.

This similiar error might be related as well
Cannot open assembly '~/.local/share/Steam/legacycompat/iscriptevaluator.exe': File does not contain a valid CIL image.

I'm not famaliar with what a CIL image is and googling only brought back results regarding compile errors from unrelated projects.

This error is possibly related as well.
installscript_posix.cpp (357) : Assertion Failed: strCommonRedistForeignInstallPath != ""

I also ran the WItcher 3 through Proton on the same system and it still runs fine. Not sure if that helps at all.

Reproduction

Not sure how to reproduce this issue on another machine.

Below is a gist of my machines full error logs related to this issue. Hopefuly that is useful. If anything else is needed or there are further questions please let me know. Thanks!

So figured out what a CIL image is: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Intermediate_Language

Still not sure what broke the game though.

Okay, so... turns out I did not actually try all versions of proton. I was not aware one could manually set the version of proton to be used per game and currently Dark Souls III defaults to 3.16-4 unless you go into the properties and check "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool". Setting this option to "Proton 3.16-6 Beta" fixed my issues with Dark Souls III and the game now runs perfect once again!

Closing issue as actually changing the Proton version fixed the issue for me.
