Take note that Steep works flawlessly on Lutris and Wine 4.x.
Try to install d3dcompiler_47.dll with protontricks and see whether it fixes the black screen or not. Sometimes reninstalling Visual C++ redistributables also help.
installing d3dcompiler_47.dll didn't help, didn't try to re-install Visual C++ yet
edit: i uninstalled visual c++ with protontricks and installed it again, also with protontricks. i still get only a blank screen.

@BackOrder I made the UPlay Steep Lutris installer and while the game does run, it can't connect to the servers. I am guessing it has to do with some DRM. So it will be basically unplayable, unless you have done progress on a Windows machine, since in offline mode in Wine you can't do any activities/progress the game.
Steep needs newer Wine, it doesn't work with 3.16 that Proton currently use.
The new version of Proton (4.2) makes a difference. Steep will still run with a black screen but alt-enter will put it in windowed mode. The game crashes when it tries to connect online. You may try to turn Uplay offline but Steep cannot be played as it will take you back to the starting screen.
