Symptoms

Sword of the Stars needs d3dx9, d3dx9_42, d3dx9_41 and d3dx9_31 native versions to work. See WineHQ AppDb with the last report (That I wrote today) and bug report : https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46924#c4
I simply used winetricks to install d3dx9, d3dx9_42, d3dx9_41 and d3dx9_31 and wine 4.0, and the game works without any problem.

Reproduction

Installs on steam for Linux Sword of the Stars. Try to play. Get a nice black screen and a crash report of the game engine.
