Installing updated NVIDIA drivers causes updates and logout/restart to stop working

Following the instructions in the repo to update the NVIDIA drivers:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt install nvidia-driver-396

Caused my logout/restart to crash and the system update application to crash. This is on Kubuntu 18.04.

A simple restart via the command line resolved this in the end.
