Hello @friedc, please retest without PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 and a newer nVidia driver series (415.22+) because the 390 series does not support VK_EXT_transform_feedback.
With nvidia 430.26 and without PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 the issues seem to be gone. - Everything works fine as far as tested. However I haven't played that much (<1h).

I can confirm this behaviour. PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 doesn't help.
Hello @friedc, @larkaa, can one of you please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, and drag and drop the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log into the comment box.
The game got an update yesterday, so it's not clear if this is a change on the game's side or a regression in Proton.

Unfortunately, I requested a return and reimbursement of this game, so I can't retest at this time.
Re-downloaded and re-played for a while, but it's no longer launching after downloaded the latest update.
Game no longer launches after update. Logs do not appear to be generated (trying to save them).

Why don't you use the native version?
Having downloaded the windows version before a linux version was available, steam is not letting me download the native version for some reason. I've got around my proton issue by running this through Lutris until I figure out how to get the native version.
Just disable Steam Play in your Steam client :)
Tried that as well, but I'm getting the windows download still and the game won't start within steam. It's the only game I have this issue with, though. It works fine through Lutris so no big.

In the 'Create Minion' item pictures in the 'Item' window on the right side
are missing (see screenshot). However, when you hover over the position of the items
the item description is shown. The pictures of these invisible items get shown during a drag.
There is also no text in the 'Information' window on the left side (see screenshot)
Reproduction
Start a new game. Start the tutorial. Finnish the first battle.
Go to the 'Create Minion' screen.
