Have you verified that this is not the case on Windows?
The game is known to have extreme jitter issues in the main menu when playing via proton, I assume the CPU usage is related to that. I've been playing on and off for a few days now and it's somewhat inconsistent for me (using protonfixes, so an impure prefix as well). I assume it's related to pulling some assets from online (new snapmaps, news updates, etc), but I can't be certain. When the menu's being problematic, my fps reads around 40-45, but it's extremely inconsistent and can sometimes involve multiple-second freezes. Once the issue resolves, which will happen with time or just starting a level, my framerate returns to full (60 flat in menu, 90+ in game).
Of note, even after the menu jitter resolves, CPU usage in the menu -does- remain notably high for me as well (~80% on all four cores of an i5-7300HQ), but I can't confirm that particular issue is Linux-only.
I use OpenGL rather than Vulkan because the latter doesn't play nice with the steam overlay. I can't confirm the issue or lack thereof with Vulkan.
@Newbie13XD Unfortunately i don't have a windows license for testing. But appear too strange to be a game fault. As you can see in the graph a cpu is forever stuck at 100% and is not a good symptom.
@Sanaki i'm using Vulkan and yep i confirm the steam overlay problem, but i don't have any freeze in the menu. Have you also one cpu stucked at 100%?
This increase the load of the system in general and can't play if i open other software (es. youtube music etc)
Regarding the issue of can't open other software because of cpu busy and lag in the game i have narrow the problem in Discord software that seems the cause of those mini freezes during close fight activity with some number of players in Doom. Disable in Discord app settings > Voice & Video > Automatically determine input sensitivity seems help (maybe are deadlock generated in pulseaudio?).
I think the real issue here remain (high cpu usage in menu), but need some test on windows to understand if is in proton or in game side. If anyone is able to test to windows would be great.
Ah. In that case, perhaps it isn't related after all. Protonfixes is giving me the razer chroma fix from #896, you may want to try using that and see if it fixes your CPU spike. My issue is at least only a mild annoyance, it's not blocking any other software or anything like that. It could probably help me cook breakfast on my desk, but that's about it.
The vulkan issue with the overlay is already being tracked in #2974. I saw mention there of it being an nvidia driver issue, but if you're experiencing it on a Radeon, that may be of note to that issue.
I didn't know about Protonfixes, thanks, without installing it i have manually replaced the CChromaEditorLibrary.dll as seems to be the fix in Protonfixes and watch the graph below :)

md5 before b003da9308f6c78d13bb6278720d9a05
md5 now dfa85e0a8ba1956029f9464d7a5b4621
the average cpu usage is decreased!, but there is a process thread in doom that still use the cpu at %100! Must investigate in windows if have the same behavior
Regarding the overlay issue for me doesn't crash but just blink continuously (i have shared the comment also in the specifc issue)
@jsecchiero Did you ever find a fix for the second instance? I seem to have the same issue when looking at certain areas of the map.

CPU usage is huge in the menu (without enter any game), i have tried to disable chroma but no improvement. This increase the load of the system in general and can't play if i open other software (es. youtube music etc)
