This issue report would benefit greatly from the inclusion of more information. For example, your system specs, gpu driver versions, gamemode configuration, examples of specific games where you have seen this issue, etc...
after several runs it seems still crash after I removed gamemode from launch option. Let me get the Steam console when it happens, since it doesn't always happen. I think it didn't crash when I was using 4.11-6. After upgrade itself to 4.11-7 something wrong happens. There is no option to revert to 4.11-6
here Steam output when it crashed

If the crash log isn't enough. I don't think system spec will help you. Even Steam uses mini dump
Nope.
To try replicating the issue we need to know exactly what you're running including driver versions.
I don't have your issue so it's system specific, you see?
OK. I see,
I have here Steam System Info
steam-system.log
Steam Settings: Steam Overlay enabled. bluetooth dualshock 4 connection.
The Game having the issue is Darksiders 3 with controller "forced on" setting
The new changes to Proton 4.11-7 hotplug controllers
I could go back to test 4.11-6. If you show me way to install 4.11-6 I would able confirm the issue could be 4.11-7
I done some further testing, seamed to reveal that if I start the game without controller connected, it starts OK. If start the game with the controller already connected, often the Steam exits, leaving the game trying to continue by itself. Of course it fails.
Here works ok.
Does this work on native games? If so disregard the below.
Update your kernel and update your Nvidia driver to the short-lived branch 435.21 to rule out any issues related to them.
I'd assume this is a kernel issue though since the gamemode script changes system settings related to both kernel and I/O. You would have to manually comb through the script and see what commands it runs and then run each one manually until you find the one causing the problem.
Initially I thought is gamemode, I have remove gamemode as an issue because still crash when I am not using gamemode. It is definitely not a kernel issue since Tekken 7 works.
Native games certainly do not have problems.
4.15 was released in January of 2018. It could indeed be a kernel issue even if it's not obvious in the steam error log. Especially where proton/wine is concerned.
It will take very little time to upgrade the kernel and if it doesn't fix it you can downgrade to the old version.
It's going to be trial and error with this unless you can find the specific error causing the problem and tell it to us. But if you're not willing to humor us and try ruling out issues like outdated software there isn't much we can do to help you without a specific error.
Anddd if tekken 7 works with proton and gamemode isn't the issue then this bug report should be closed or the OP modified to detail the current problem.
I tested several more times. whenever the controller connect first, the Steam crashes or Proton crash or game crash, not exactly sure which one.
can I then change the title to remove gamemode

This is different from the issue described in the OP and should have it's own bug report.
Ok then I will open another report.
