Reproduction

The menu will load but upon loading one of the included games you will get a black screen. With standard proton and launch options the audio is also currently broken.

Symptoms

This is another game that will require WMV support to properly function.
Inside of the folders such as: "Mega Man X Legacy Collection 2/nativeDX10/X5/movie" you will find the videos. If you delete the videos the game will check for them and crash with an error pop-up, but if you replace the video files with 0 byte files the games will be playable.

With 4.11-9 however the audio won't work unless you use wineD3D ( mesa_glthread=true PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%). Using my tkg staging proton build however the audio works without needing it. So there is some patch that might need to be pulled into proton. This is a weird bug however as it cannot allocate memory.

After getting past the videos I don't see any other issues with the gameplay, control, graphics, etc. Probably runs better than windows since many windows users complain of framerate problems, inability to set resolution, control issues, etc. I have no trouble setting 1080p/1440p here or borderless window mode.

See here for scripts to rename all of the video files. As there are dozens in these games it will save a lot of time. You can also revert the video file names back with the second provided script. The 3rd script can create 0 byte video files also.

I've found out an issue with this game using Proton 9.0-1 and 9.0-2 (RC). If you change the screen settings to "fullscreen" and restart it, you won't be able to play it again because it hangs in a black screen. To fix it, you need to edit the config.ini file in the installation directory and set Fullscreen=OFF. For now you can't choose "fullscreen" in the settings, otherwise you end up with a broken game. I've tried using WineD3D, but got the same issue. Here are the logs for the black screen:

@ranplayer just like with your oddworld issue, this appears to be a xwayland regression. This also seems to be fixed on https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/merge_requests/1564

Hi @simifor . I've just received a Steam Runtime update that makes this game unplayable in any Proton or xwayland version (I've tried even with an X session and couldn't boot the game). I'll attach the logs:
steam-743900.tar.gz

Main error lines:

Now I understand what happens with this game. It considers whatever settings are saved on the cloud as priority. To fix it, I've disabled the cloud sync and removed the config.ini file in the installation folder. The xwayland downgrade works for fullscreen as well, so you're right @simifor. Thank you.

Ssimifor 2024-06-06 github

@ranplayer a bit odd that you couldn't launch it from xorg or older xwayland considering that was working fine, but I'm glad you got things sorted. Was the configs.ini corrupted with crashing maybe?

The only issue I've spotted so far with this collection using Proton 11.0 (beta) is still the audio crackling on videos and audio cuts in game (Mega Man X5 is the easiest to reproduce... if you play the first level for less than one minute, it's possible to notice).
