Symptoms

On launch, after selecting resolution and windowed/fullscreen in a little launcher window, the game immediately crashes. If I add PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 to the launch options, I can get past this, see a title screen, and start creating a character. When I get to appearance customization, all I get is a white screen with a few UI options visible. Moving past this, I am able to start the game, but all the textures and models are missing. All I get is a black screen with all the UI elements on it. Here's what that looks like:

Reproduction

To get a crash, start the game with no launch options. To get the black screen, launch with PROTON_USE_WINED3D11=1 %command% and then start trying to play.

Hello @Reifam, can you also share a Proton log from the game crashing without PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1?

It won't help with rendering, but please rebuild media-libs/libsdl2 with USE=haptic (err:plugplay:deviceloop_thread Can't init SDL: SDL not built with haptic (force feedback) support).

Hello, Kisak! Here's the log of a standard crash. I rebuilt libsdl2 with haptic support but that didn't seem to fix it in either scenario

This looks like the line of interest from the log: wine: Unhandled exception 0x20474343 in thread 37 at address 0x7b45318c (thread 0037), starting debugger...

Is this a known problem that has happened with other games?

The game has received a patch since the last update to this thread. Here are new logs just in case there is any different worth noting. None of the issues have changed. Still blackscreens with options and crashes without them.

Update
Update again. I think the game got another patch, although seems mostly mod tools related. Proton also hit the big 5.0, which is great! Lastly I ran a bunch of system updates recently so all my stuff is on different versions, so I figured I'd try it again. Unfortunately these updates and changes did not improve the ability to play Freeman.

Mesa is now 20.0.0_rc1
Kernel is now 5.5.2 (-gentoo-r1)
Proton version is 5.0-1
Nothing has changed about my systems specifications/hardware
Here's the new crash dump. Ran with just the PROTON_LOG and not the other stuff

Hello, I have updated my Mesa and Kernel several times since last post, and Freeman works much better now. The only weird things i've seen are flickering grass textures during combat, but otherwise everything is running smoothly and without errors.

My current versions now:
Mesa 20.0.4-r1
Kernel 5.6.4 (-gentoo)
Proton 5.0-6
