Proton log with a pristine installation: steam-914110.001.log

Proton log with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1: steam-914110.wined3d.log

Proton log with dotnet40 installed: steam-914110.dotnet40.log

Proton log with MF libraries installed (@kisak-valve I own a licence to Windows 7/10 to be clear): steam-914110.mf.log

Symptoms

The game loads and a auto saving page shows up but then the screen remains black. The game cursor is still working.

Additionally, you will find a log with dotnet40 trick installed. It's unclear whether it needs dotnet 4.0 or not but the log spew something about it, so I gave it a try. Waiting few minutes after no activity did output more in the log. Might be interesting, might not.

Installing MF libraries does help where audio is working and it displays a loading screen and so on but it gets stuck further down the road.

Reproduction

  1. Run the game.

Hello @BackOrder, I'm not seeing hints of .NET in the log, but it does look like this game is hitting the same snafu as https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/3331#issuecomment-567533598. It may be worth retesting once progress is made on that issue.

Hello @kisak-valve , this is usually not a problem for newer games but I did test with Proton 4.2-9 for good measure. Unfortunately, no cake. Always glad to see you around. I wish you happy happy holidays!

@kisak-valve @BackOrder I'm also hitting this problem. Tried with Proton 4 through to Proton 5.0-9.

It does show some visuals now (attached) but gets stuck on a black screen after the autosave screen.

Log is attached. Any ideas on this? Two of the turn based strategy games I want to play have game breaking issues (this and Gears Tactics). I seem to be doomed :)

Thank you

Tested Proton-5.9-GE-6-ST (log) and proton-5.0-10-rc4 (log).
Both stall on a black screen after the loading/autosave screens.
Steam system info

With proton-5.0-10-rc4 + <Workaround removed by moderator>, you can hear but not see the developer/publisher logos video play, then you see the loading/autosave screens, then it stalls with a black screen just when the intro video should play. Still stalls in the same place after deleting the video files.

The game does work with Wine-staging 5.17. You can hear but not see the developer/publisher logos video play, the rest of the game seems to play fine, videos and all. Lots of mfplat messages in the Lutris log.

Adding <Workaround removed by moderator> to the Wine-staging 5.17 prefix makes it stall on the usual black screen, with lots of ntdll messages in the Lutris log.

Updated post with system info and Proton logs.

Hello @dpanter, the workaround you mentioned is legally problematic and has been removed.

Ddpanter 2020-09-18 github

Sorry about that. It was included only for reference as it doesn't actually fix anything in this case.

Retested with 5.13-1b, same result as before, stalling on a black screen after autosave screen.
