Hello @The1AndMany, this reads like a game-specific performance issue instead of a general SteamVR performance issue, so I've transferred this issue report to the Proton issue tracker.

This game runs flawlessly... did you try using another more modern distro like Manjaro?

I'm not well-versed in technical Linux stuff, and I don't want to lose my data or have to back it up and replace it, so I haven't switched distros before.

I'm using vanilla Ubuntu 18.04 with KDE Plasma, if that makes a difference.

You should switch. You're on an version which hasn't effectively received an update in almost 2 years. A LOT of fixes have happened since then. I recommend you to backup your data onto another drive, disconnect the other drives and install Manjaro.

Save both on your desktop or somewhere you can easily access, just not in the usb you are going to use to make manjaro bootable

Run etcher and select the USB(MAKE SURE IT IS EMPTY, EVERYTHING ON IT WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE) and the ISO. And simply make it bootable, pretty straight forward. Then boot in

Issue Report

Symptoms

When playing Budget Cuts (tried The Lab as well) there's a constant crackling sound coming from both speakers. The crackling goes away when using an older version of Proton (5.0-10 doesn't have audio issues). Native games also don't have any audio crackling. Leading me to believe it's an issue with Proton 5.13-2.

Of note, the audio works fine until step 3 below. Once the audio starts crackling though it doesn't stop until I reboot SteamVR.

Reproduction

  1. Launch SteamVR.
  2. Swap audio output source to VR headset.
  3. Launch Budget Cuts from SteamVR home.
