I want to elaborate on the compatibility of this game.
GPU: GTX 1060 6GB
Driver/LLVM version: NVIDIA 460.91.03 (Debian bullseye based distro)
Kernel version: several tested: 5.10.81-tkg, 5.10.57-antix, 5.10.75
Proton version: several tested: 6.3-8 and 6.3-7, 6.19-ge2 and 6.21-ge2
The init bgm error is not present anymore, however... in my case the music in this game crackles and microstutters often, after some minutes of gameplay. I've tried everything I could. editing /etc/pulse/default.pa and /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to apply optimizations to them, such as fragment size and buffer, and other fixes i've read on the arch wiki to address crackling and stuttering with audio playback, to no avail. Adding some latency to the HDMI audio output in pavucontrol will alleviate the issue, but it comes back after some seconds.
Since there are no more things i can think of that could be causing this error, all I can do is to report this odd behavior that I haven't experience in any other game or use case.
Edit: I've also tested a more bleeding edge distro, trying to rule out possible PulseAudio related bugs.
I tried Garuda Dragonized Gaming Edition which employs PIpewire instead of PA and it's a lot more modern in everything, like including version 495 of the NVIDIA driver, also has Steam preinstalled. Same result.
Lastly, I tried in this same distro without my NVIDIA GPU, using my integrated Ryzen 3 2200 GPU, trying to rule out NVIDIA GPU bugs as well. Same result, popping and skipping occurred after some seconds of gameplay. Since I've done these more recent tests using Proton 6.3-8 in all software and hardware configurations, while changing the kernel and general software, including GPU drivers, I can safely conclude it's a Proton bug - it's not handling the audio playback in this game, which uses an own way of playing chiptunes of some sort.
As you can tell, I really like this game, since i spent all this time to make it work, and it's a shame for me to have this annoying audio bug that won't let me enjoy the soundtrack... And I really hope someone could fix it.
Actually, the fix was way easier than i thought.... Just adding PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=90 %command% to the game's startup options found ### right clicking in the game -> Properties worked!
