Hello @yhojann-cl, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.)

I use Steam client from Flatpak:

$ flatpak list | grep Steam

I try find in:

  • ~/.var/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam (not found)
  • ~/ (not found)
  • /var/lib/flatpak/app/com.valvesoftware.Steam/current/active/files (not found)
  • /mnt/STEAM/SteamLibrary (not found)
  • /mnt/STEAM/SteamLibrary/steamapps/common/Painkiller Hell & Damnation (not found)
  • /tmp (not found)

I try found using find $pat_to_find -iname "steam-*.log" command but the log is not found in any path.

That's a fairly strong indicator that the error message you're seeing is coming from the Linux native variant of the game, and issues with Linux native variants of games should be reported directly to the game's dev(s).

Hello there, I just tried launching Painkiller Hell & Damnation and the native Linux version got installed by default even though it doesn't work. Protondb users suggesting swapping over to Proton. What's the actual policy on this? I mean obviously the native version is borked for 99% of people and still gets installed by default on Linux clients, kinda sad they have to switch to Proton manually?
