Symptoms

The Ship works fine with Proton 4.11-13, but for some reason, it only loads a black screen using Proton 5.0-9.

Not sure what changed between versions. I know that I had an authentication server error (found here: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2297) in Proton 3.16 but that was fixed with Proton 4.2-5.

Hello @benbrockn, err:x11settings:X11DRV_ChangeDisplaySettingsEx No matching mode found: width=1280 height=720 bpp=32 freq=60 (XRandR 1.2) looks like a line of interest from the log. Does setting the game's launch options to PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% have an effect?

That worked, thank you! Is using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% going to be the way forward for newer Proton versions?

It tells us that the regression you've found is related to DXVK gaining D3D9 support in Proton 5.0.

@kisak-valve ,

If this same issue might be a problem in other older games, and if it can't be fixed with newer Proton versions, could it be a checkbox on the game's "properties" menu?

@kisak-valve

I also noticed that G-Sync isn't working for this game (it's currently working for other games like NMS, Satisfactory, Borderlands 2, etc...), see screenshot.

This remains the case and in fact it freezes my whole system (no input) and I've to manually shut it down.

However as suggested, when run with PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 it will launch, but remains unplayable due to the visual artefacts (7.0-1), mouse flickering and overlapping frozen frames (5.0-10, 4.11-13), while the main menu appears to be rendered outside of the screen and audio is playing.

I can't upload the 5.0-10 or 4.11-13 logfile(s) to github (infinite loading circle) or pastebin (max character limit).

Hello, can someone retest how this game behaves out of the box with Proton 7.0 and DXVK (no launch options)? https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/commit/b3fabaa463583a16f19da58ccc8d1242d74caa10 should have helped.
