Also experiencing the same issue as @PsychedelicHell for this Vulkan-based application (using Avalanche Studios "Apex" engine)

System Information

I confirm:

  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Consistent application crashes during the launch process after receiving messages regarding an "unsupported operation system" and "out-of-date" graphics driver:

Reproduction

  1. Select the title within your Library using the Steam client and press the Play button
  2. Select OK on the first dialog screen ("unsupported operation system")
  3. Select Yes on the second dialog screen ("out-of-date" graphics driver)
  4. Select either Send report or Close the program on the Error Report dialog screen

Get the same error here. I've played quite a few games via Proton and have never seen this error before.

As far as I've seen, those with AMD cards can play via Proton and those with Nvidia cards can not.

That's weird. I wonder why?

DDistantThunder 2020-12-18 github

Maybe try faking AMD GPU with DXVK.

Potentially overreaching logic trying to manage users drivers for them, perhaps this is another NVAPI shenanigan.

@DistantThunder @Hunk4TH @PsychedelicHell Good advice, specifying PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=1 %command% within the launch options now allows the game to launch successfully (message regarding an "unsupported operation system" still remains)

Unfortunately there appears to be 2 new issues:

  1. Starting any game mode (Mission/Expedition) results in a black screen with music, ALT + F4 closes the application window but sound continues playing until manually selecting STOP within the Steam client: steam-1024380.log (Proton Experimental)

  2. Exiting the application closes the window but sound continues playing until manually selecting STOP within the Steam client: steam-1024380.log (Proton 5.13-4)

@aeikum Shouldn't PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU be redundant if Proton (DXVK) reports NVIDIA GPUs as AMD GPUs by default?

Aaeikum 2020-12-21 github

The GPU reporting stuff is a bit of a mess. The stuff you point to only overrides the reporting from DXGI and other D3D interfaces. The hidenvgpu goes further and tries to override the hardware we report in all APIs, including vulkan, setupapi, wbemprox, etc.

Anybody else can't load up to the main menu? Says something about not being able to make a lobby

I'm using steam client beta, linux runtime soldier beta, and proton experimental (default branch).

I could sign in Apex Connect. after that, I got following error screen endlessly...

Network connection error
Failed to host a multiplayer session.

I also got similar error when joining/invited another session.

Game consistently crashes when ALT-TAB'ing. Happens in stable/experimental Proton.
