Hello @CrafterSvK, please copy your system information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.
Fixed using winetricks d3dx9_43 on Anno wineprefix.
For me, Anno 1404 (33250) works perfectly if Anno 1404: Venice (33350) is not installed. Installing Venice leads to an black screen on Anno 1404 vanilla, too.

It actually works if you install DirectX.
Check this : https://spcr.netlify.com/search?q=anno 1404
The bug is definitely that DirectX is not installed properly when the Venice extension is there.
I tried to start Anno 1404 (without Venice installed) wiht the following launch options:
PROTON_NO_D3D11=1 %command%
It installed dx9 but Anno 1404 crashes at start. Without the launch options, it works until in-game, where it flickers heavily.
Got it !!!
Thnx to yours helps.
Ubuntu 18.04 running KDE, Nvidia GTX-750 TI, i5 x64.
Proton deault.
After running WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/33250/pfx" winetricks d3dx9 and modifying Engine.ini with 9 instead 0 in DirectxVersion.
Blackscreen dissapeared and Anno 1404 runs smoothly with videos and sound OK.
CPU Brand: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz
Operating System Version: Linux Mint 19 Tara (64 bit)
Video Card: NVIDIA Corporation GeForce GTX 960M/PCIe/SSE2
Video Card Driver Version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 390.77
Tested everything here mentioned, but nothing works for me. I have sound, but no image.
Tested:
WINEPREFIX="/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/33250/pfx"
winetricks d3dx9
No changes...
Tested even:
winetricks d3dx9_43
Still nothing...
Hi,
It is indeed possible to make it run, but with a bit of tweaks.
1/ Edit file :/home/$USER/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/33250/pfx/user/steamuser/ApplicationData/Anno1404/Config/Engine.ini
2/ If the file did not exist previously its content should be :9
3/ If it already exists make sure the DIrectXVersion line is set to 9.
Enjoy :-)

Proton 4.2-2 here
I got the game running using ProtonGE, but does anybody know how to fix the completely broken font?

running on Windows:

@zocker-160 aye, see https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/641#issuecomment-487459265.
With Proton 7.0 the game works ootb for me. No change needed anymore and it even seems to run in DX10 mode. Thank you Valve!
Edit: There's one caveat though, after installing Venice Addon, the black screen problem is back. After uninstalling Venice it works again.
@kaktuspalme I think you still need to install the fonts (?) At least for me I had to install corefonts to make it not look really bad like in my screenshots above.
@zocker-160 The font looks differently than in your second screenshot but it's very readable. So, in my opinion no need to install fonts, at least on my system.
This issue looks probably safe to close, maybe close it?

Anno 1404 doesn't work on proton. Proton-3.7, bumblebee setup, GTX950M
