Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Roughly every 5 or 10 seconds the mouse cursor freezes in place and keyboard becomes non-responsive. Can't escape, can't mouse click or hold mouse click. Comes right about 5 or 10 seconds later then repeats which makes playing games unplayable.

E.g in car mechanic I might hold the left mouse button down to screw / unscrew a part of the car. The cursor freezes in place, I can move the mouse around and the screen is moving but I can't engage with the part using the mouse or if I am engaged then I can't disengage from the part using the escape key on keyboard. Left / right clicking the mouse buttons will not screw / unscrew the part.

Problem started immediately after steam updates

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Happens in Car Mechanic Simulator 2018
  2. Happens in PC Builder Simulator

Hello @morality-b, can you check if there is high disk activity at the same time you're seeing that behavior. Also, please check if the same thing happens with a native linux game (or no game running at all).

Update

  • There was another update for proton
  • Problem is no longer every 5 or 10 seconds anymore, it's random and intermittent.
  • The other change when it freezes, the mouse no longer moves the screen anymore
  • Although escape still doesn't disengage I am able to alt-tab onto the desktop
  • So keyboard is responsive, just not in the game until it unfreezes 5 or 10 seconds later
  • When it unfreezes I can continue to use the mouse and keyboard in game again

More troubleshooting

  • Non proton applications do not have this problem
  • Rocket League using Lutris through Epic Games does not have this problem
  • I have a Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB NVME (2280)
  • Disk activity during freezing episodes were no higher than 2% so low activity
  • CPU no higher than 11%
  • RAM about 56%
