Symptoms

The game's launcher opens up, though the text fonts are a bit wonky, but when I hit play, I get a black screen that remains unchanged till I quit the game. I had a look at the log file and I wonder if line 468 in the attached log
"err: D3D11RasterizerState: Antialiased lines not supported"
is potentially causing the problem.

Reproduction

Install the game and run it with proton 5.13-6.

Hello @WilliamOfNormandy, it looks like this game might benefit from support for Media Foundation maturing. It may be interesting to ponder a log from Proton Experimental.

This is a log that I get from running the game with Proton Experimental. Once again, the game loads into a black screen that persists till I force quit. Hope this helps.

Still an issue.

  • Game starts
  • Plays Intro
  • Plays Video of old Guy opening Book
  • Crashes

Also the second start of the game scrambled the font of the starter.

I created an issue ticket also for the game.
Maybe it'll help.

The devs say that 1.04 is to be announced and at the same time they also alredy develop 1.05 without releasing 1.04 in the stable channels first.

Also it seems that their repo has the tag 1.04 but it shares the same commit with tag 1.03 which is confusing.

Also it seems that they don't push their newer changes in the github repo and update a office excel table in a google drive with their done and upcoming code changes.
It would be sad if they only push code changes after new public releases.
I prefer at least a beta branch if they don't want to push the stuff into the master branch directly.

It's chaotic and we need to invest time to collect every needed informations.

There are also the beta branches test and test2 in steam which are both 4 months old where the master branch is 13 months old.
And these branches are password protected.

Installing via protontricks gui for this game the windows dll gmdls fixed the ingame sounds.
(Or just protontricks 1558990 -q gmdls)

But I still don't hear music.
And I don't know if the menu buttons should make a sound if i hover them with my mouse.

I got in touch with the developer of the 1.4/1.5 patch.
It's a community patch and he will push the source code on github in his fork of the game.
He already shares the source code with his google drive account.

@MartinX3 Thanks for the tip wrt to patch 1.5! I've gotten it to work on my machine as well. I also have a copy of the original Anthology CD (from 2002) which has worked on wine pretty much since ~ v1.9.

So, assuming the modern game uses the same assets from the original release, there shouldn't be sound when you hover over the menu items. As for the no ingame music bug, the original game had a similar issue on wine. Essentially, the audio in the game is encoded through MIDI and not static audio files like mp3/wav/ogg etc. There are suggested workarounds on winehq for the original game that supposedly fix the audio and may be worth trying. I never bothered fixing the music on the original game, simply because I've always preferred playing with no audio or with a custom external playlist.
Thanks again for suggesting the fix and hope some of the additional information helps!

@WilliamOfNormandy
You're welcome

Thank you for the tip, but sadly I can't test the directX thing to enable the music because proton already delivers the directX dll's.
