Symptoms

Can't save game progress at all (or maybe even load).

Reproduction

Just save from menu. It should create save file in a game directory, but it doesn't.

Notes

Write permissions were checked and are fine. Also tried moving game folder in another partition, same issue.

Looks like the save issues have been resolved by the latest Steam Linux Runtime Soldier update.

Just giving a note for everyone if someone struggles to run this game:

  • To make saves work properly, you need to add PROTON_SET_GAME_DRIVE=1 %command% to launch options.
  • WineD3D runs poor and crashes a lot with this game. cnc-ddraw is a good solution to solve this. Download latest version, put ddraw.dll and ddraw.ini next to the game executable and add WINEDLLOVERRIDES=ddraw=n,b %command% to launch options.
  • Steam Deck users really should use cnc-ddraw otherwise your battery will not survive that long. Alternatively you can work around this by limiting TDP, but performance will suffer.
  • It's normal to see test patterns on cutscenes for the first time. For me, it showed perfectly fine next day, so you need to wait for Valve servers to re-encode these videos.
