Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection
  • Steam AppID of the game: 999020

System Information

  • GPU: RX 5700 XT
  • Driver/LLVM version: Mesa 21.1.2 / LLVM 12.0.0
  • Kernel version: 5.8.0-55-generic
  • Link to full system information report as Gist:
  • Proton version: 5.13-6

I confirm:

  • [✅] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [✅] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

FMVs (the cutscenes) don't play in the Mega Man ZX games of the collection. Instead of playing, there's a blank (white) screen while the music of the scene prior to the FMV keeps playing. The cutscene can be skipped however. Most likely a Media Foundation problem.

Reproduction

  1. Launch the game.
  2. Start either of the ZX games (Mega Man ZX or Mega Man ZX Advent).
  3. Play until an FMV starts playing (a white screen should show up).

1-) Proton log is missing.
2-) Why Proton 5.13-6?

Ffighuass 2021-06-13 github
  1. Sorry, is this the one? steam-999020.log

  2. I went with 5.13-6 since the latest report on ProtonDB recommended using it, and unlike the previous reports it didn't mention the FMVs not working.

I cannot launch the game. It's like if the install script was not launching. When I click "Play", it changes to "Cancel" and it says "launching" on the right, but the name of the game stays in white on the left with the the "- launching" added to it. And nothing else happens. I cannot get a log file, as if proton was not launching.
I have the exact same problem with the Mega Man X Collection, but not with Mega Man Collection. I've given more details in the corresponding issue.

Switching to Proton 7 solved the problem, as explained there: [#6859](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6859).
After that, I was able to switch back to Proton 8 and it worked.

I've found an issue with this title using Proton 9.0-4, 10.0-2 (RC) and Experimental (2025-07-25). If you launch this game and change the window mode to "fullscreen" (without changing the resolution firstly to match the desktop's), it hangs on a black screen and then an error popup is displayed (happens with DXVK and WineD3D)

Hello @ranplayer, for clarity, does that game run as expected with Proton 8.0 and older or did you stop checking older builds of Proton after seeing how the game behaves with Proton 9.0-4?

Rranplayer 2025-07-28 github

Hi @kisak-valve . I had stopped with 9.0, but just tested with 8.0-5 and the issue doesn't happen.

@ranplayer I've been trying to repro on proton 9/10/exp with plasma wayland/xorg and it has worked fine every time on my end. Looking close into your log file I see that your resolution isn't 16:9, and I think your issue might stem from that rather than the resolution not being the same as your monitor.

In my case, the game lists only 16:9 resolution, but yours is set to 1920x1060 which is 96:53. What is your monitor's resolution? What resolutions does the game list for you? And what's the output of xrandr (run it in your terminal)?

Rranplayer 2025-10-21 github

@simifor , sorry for the really late response (some times I get lost with so many threads). Just to be more specific: the issue only happens for a clean installation (if you set the game to fullscreen without changing the resolution firstly). If you do the opposite, no issues (even if you retry the first scenario). I've just tried with Proton 10-3 (RC), Mesa 25.2.5 and kernel 6.12.53 and was able to reproduce the crash.

@ranplayer can't repro here. Wiped the prefix each try, the game starts as 1600x900 on my end while my monitor is 2k, switching to fullscreen before switching resolution first still had the game behave correctly. Tried on plasma xorg and wayland. I think the main factor here is likely the aspect ratio the game is trying to run as.
