Hello @DrewBrunning, the warn:seh:OutputDebugStringA "Backup.cpp(482): MBackupSegment::AutoLoadCore(): Local Data Load Error\n" lines in the log look mildly interesting, and might be related to the freezes that you are seeing, but I don't know how to translate that into something a Proton dev can look into.
Thanks for taking a look @kisak-valve. Is there more information I can try to gather that might be helpful?
Adding four more log files to hopefully help isolate the issue.
The first of these crash logs observed significant lag/stuttering of graphics during the fight that triggers the freeze. The second one was on-par with what was experienced on a PSX (and/or when using my original game disc and PCSXR on this same machine) up to the point of freezing.
The ProtonDB page for LoM also indicates others are experiencing this same crash with different hardware including Intel processor and NVIDIA GPU so this doesn't seem to be limited to AMD hardware. Please let me know if there are any other tests I can run that might help provide better logs, other things I should try to turn on to assist with diagnosing this (such as other launch arguments), or any other system information I can provide.
Since the game is starting up correctly, I doubt this is related to this game using Denuvo, but mentioning it just in case.
One user on ProtonDB and Steam Forums seems to be able to play the game with modifications: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1175830/discussions/0/4312743731803752602/
They report needing to delete the audio files and configuration file to resolve the issue. Unfortunately, deleting the audio files does not resolve the issue for me (game hang/crash remains reliably reproducible); however, I'm not sure if audio file loading is something a Proton dev can look at.
I just wanted to comment that this crash is still occurring today with Proton 6.3-8, Experimental, and Proton-7.1_GE_2-1. Since the crash is assumed to be music related, I tried switching to the Original soundtrack and adjust the in-game volume, but it unsurprisingly made no difference. I cannot discern any pattern to the crashes. It doesn't seem to be related to what the player is doing. Sometimes crashes happen after a few minutes, and it once made it almost an hour.
Still happens in Proton 8.0-1. (yes, GPU driver is newest nvidia version that supports Vulkan 1.3)
SQUARE-ENIX logo pops up, and a couple other logos.
Then a rabite hops from the right side to the left side of the screen.
Then the screen goes black and nothing happens.
Edit: Proton Experimental (as of April 29, 2023) takes me to the title screen. Will play this game a bunch and report if any further weirdness happens.
Edit: leaving the Monster Corral screen (outdoors) at bottom left corner, went to loading screen with a non-animating rabite, and the computer fans went into overdrive and game froze. Had to click Stop in Steam to exit.
The game still crashes after a few minutes at the first combat area, on the Steam Deck.
I tested this with the latest Proton (8.0.2), GE (8-4) and Experimental.
Finding out this game was not compatible with the steam deck was hugely dissappointing. i would really love to see this corrected, without deleting the music, considing how impactful to the experience of this game the music is.
any updates?
I'm curious if this one is fixed on Proton 9

Tried playing it again with "Proton 9.0 (Beta)". It doesn't immediately crash at the title screen for me, but it still randomly freezes during gameplay. Once the game is frozen, computer fans go full-blast until the process is forcefully killed.
With Proton GE 9-4 the music cut out, where it usually would crush, but I was able to continue playing. But without music it's not the same
The game still freezes after a while, sound etc. works. tried with latest proton and with proton experimental on steam deck.
There is finally a fix on protondb. Bad xaudio2_8.dll 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Compatibility Report
System Information
I confirm:
steam-1175830.log
Symptoms
Game freezes frequently, generally when moving between areas or in combat. Music continues playing, but the game is not responsive. Eventually the prompt to terminate the game will appear.
Reproduction
This will happen every few minutes while playing the game, especially during combat. The attached log is from a save file before the first boss fight which will always freeze within a couple of minutes of gameplay.
