steam-322170.log

When trying to run Geometry Dash with nvidia dGPU, the game crashes before showing anything (creating a window).
(Preparing to launch... window appears, then closes, the play button in Steam stays blue for a while, then turns back to green.)

Proton logs show page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).

Reproduction

Add prime-run %command% to launch options.

System Information

  • GPU: RTX 3060ti

Symptoms

The game feels like it's running at a much lower framerate than is being rendered. for example the game is rendering 144fps but feels like it's running at 30 (possibly just a quirk of how geometry dash was developed but doesn't happen on native windows

Reproduction

just play geometry dash. it'll happen.

Hello @Fxzzi, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, reproduce the regression, and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, please copy the contents of Steam Runtime Diagnostics from Steam (Steam -> Help -> Steam Runtime Diagnostics) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

Log

https://gist.github.com/furretgd1/78d3650e389bb3d533db17183bc468dc

Symptoms

The game is currently inconsistently and inaccurately registering input releases and holding inputs for too long. You can most easily notice this with the ship gamemode within Geometry Dash via either Mouse or Keyboard. If you're skilled enough you can see the issue even easier in the insane demon Buff This. The bug seems to be inconsistent with when it decides to hold or miss inputs.

Reproduction

  1. My system configuration to replicate this is running an Intel Arc B580 with an Intel I5-13600KF using Bar support running DDR5 memory at 5600 MHz profile.

  2. Running the Arch Linux distro using Hyprland as the Window Manager

(NOTE: running with or without Gamescope doesn't resolve the bug for me but feel free to test with and without gamescope)

  1. Running the game with these options: WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_4=n,b" %command%

  2. Playing any level will result in the bug appearing however buff this is the easiest to spot the bug in.

Yes, the overlay works fine under these conditions, and the game feels much better than without the native winewaylanddrv. Using Proton-EM btw.

UPD: Good latency wise but worse in performance (tested on Future Funk II level)

Geometry Dash has frame pacing issues at 75 Hz

Compatibility Report

Game Information

  • Name: Geometry Dash
  • Steam AppID: 322170

System Information

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB
  • Driver: NVIDIA 580 (also tested with 535.309.01)
  • Kernel: 6.8.0-134-generic
  • Desktop Environment: XFCE
  • Display Server: X11
  • Distribution: Linux Mint 22.1 (Xia)
  • Proton version: Proton Experimental (also tested with Proton GE)
  • Monitor: HannStar U171 (1280×1024, 60 Hz / 75 Hz)

I confirm:

  • [x] No third-party modifications were used during testing.
  • [x] Steam Overlay disabled.
  • [x] Tested on a clean installation.
  • [x] Proton log attached.

Issue Description

Geometry Dash launches and is fully playable, but gameplay feels significantly less smooth when the monitor is running at 75 Hz.

The FPS counter remains stable and MangoHud shows stable frametimes, yet the game feels as if it is running well below the reported frame rate.

The issue only occurs during gameplay. Menus are generally unaffected unless the FPS cap does not match the game's internal timing.

Changing the monitor back to 60 Hz immediately restores smooth gameplay.

Reproduction Steps

  1. Set the monitor to 1280×1024 @ 75 Hz.
  2. Launch Geometry Dash using Proton.
  3. Start any level.
  4. Observe that gameplay feels much less smooth than at 60 Hz.

What I Tested

  • Proton Experimental
  • Proton GE
  • NVIDIA Driver 535.309.01
  • NVIDIA Driver 580
  • Geode disabled
  • Vanilla Geometry Dash
  • Steam Overlay disabled
  • Custom XRandR modeline (74.90 Hz)
  • Stable FPS and frametimes confirmed with MangoHud
  • Minecraft runs correctly at 75 Hz on the same hardware.

Additional Observation

I found a reproducible timing pattern.

Using the default 240 TPS:

  • 60 FPS → smooth
  • 120 FPS → smooth
  • 180 FPS → smooth
  • 75 FPS → feels much less smooth
  • 150 FPS → feels much less smooth

Using 225 TPS (Eclipse mod):

  • 75 FPS → smooth
  • 150 FPS → smooth
  • 225 FPS → smooth
  • 120 FPS → feels much less smooth
  • 180 FPS → feels much less smooth
  • 240 FPS → feels much less smooth

This may be related to frame pacing or timing rather than rendering performance.
