Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Rustler
  • Steam AppID of the game: 844260

System Information

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Game crashes on startup when launched with proton experimental (also bleeding edge)
Game launches fine with 6.3-7 & 6.3-8 RC

steam-844260.log
Player.log (unity log)
error.log (additional unity log)

Player.log (log from 6.3-7 to compare)

Reproduction

Launch game with proton experimental -> game will show black screen shortly and then crash with unity crash reporter

Other info

I tried playing with 6.3-7 shortly and there everything appeared to work. Except the intro videos showing the test images.

Additional info from comparing the player.log between 6.3-8 RC and experimental

In working log it will have an additional line with Adapter LUID 0: 0:3f6 near the top where it lists GPU stuff.

In crashing log the lines

info: VK_KHR_buffer_device_address
info: bufferDeviceAddress : 0

will be present, but not so in working log.

In working log a bit before the crash happens a line will show <RI> Touch support initialization failed: Call not implemented. and in the crashing log it will show <RI> Initialized touch support.

Edit:
Also the error.log showing this might not be good.

Now launches fine on experimental again.

Intro video/splashes with proton 7.0-1 and experimental have this weird pattern overlayed the on all of them.

In 6.3-8 the first splash showed a test image but the second one and the video showed fine.

Proton log, please! With GST_DEBUG=4 on it.

BBlisto91 2022-02-23 github

@CSahajdacny Derp of course. Didn't realize it could be useful here.

Here is with PROTON_LOG=1 GST_DEBUG=4 on experimental. I let all of the intro stuff finish and then i quit at the main menu.

And also a updated system info gist for good measure.

@Blisto91 This is a victim of flipping the logic on a hack -- if you add PROTON_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER=1 %command% to the command line, the videos should look great again :). The hack should be updated to include this game in the next Proton release. Thanks for the report!

BBlisto91 2022-03-01 github

The option does not appear to fix it
Tho this look is great and artsy in it's own way

Edit: Nvm it does seem to fix it on 7.0-1.
Tho it doesn't work with Experimental or Bleeding Edge

Whoops! Looks like the variable changed to WINE_DO_NOT_CREATE_DXGI_DEVICE_MANAGER in experimental. Now you can use any proton version again :D

The latest game update seems to fix the video playback issues and the constant crashes I was experiencing. I was able to play it without any proton related issues for a couple of hours on the steam deck. (edit: was using proton 7.0-1).

Nnhkode 2022-04-05 github

Regarding the crashes I spoke too soon. The game still crashes regularly. No clue if proton or the game are to blame for that. Player.log contains the log of the game itself and has a stack trace at the end.

Both are from the steam deck running proton 7.0-1.

Hmm. I'm suprised the steam decks driver version only reports 21.20.1 and vulkan 1.2.199. Tho i guess it might be a earlier git version before the numbers were changed. Oh no wait that's the spoofed windows driver version.

I wonder if it would make a difference disabling fsync.
Can test a bit myself later. Don't have a steam deck yet tho.

Nnhkode 2022-04-05 github

Disabling fsync looks promising. I just ran the game with PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 and was able to play for 80 minutes without a crash. I believe the game usually crashed after 40 minutes previously.

Yay!
And sadness about fsync.
