steam-12330-proton-6.3-8c.log using PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1
steam-12330-proton-6.3-8c-dvxk.log using DXVK
steam-12330.log without any override

Symptoms

Game does start and seems playable with Proton 4.2-9
Game does start with newer versions of Proton than 4.2-9 (4.11-13+) but crashes immediately after the very first logo intro video when the screen says Darkstar One loading.
Game does start with Proton 4.11-13+ when disabling DXVK via PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 and seems playable for a bit but crashes randomly after either intro video or in the first tutorial mission.

Reproduction

Game seems to work:

  1. install game
  2. set Proton version to 4.2-9
  3. set launch options to WINEDLLOVERRIDES="iphlpapi=b" %command% (according to PCGamingWiki the shipped iphlpapi.dll is outdated and causes game crashes on higher resolutions, e.g. full HD. edit: seems to work without the override)
  4. after watching the videos, accept tutorial mission from terminal, leave station, fly in circles, there are some stutters which don't appear in later versions (at least not in 6.3-8c)

Game starts with disabling DXVK, but crashes:

  1. install game
  2. set Proton to anything after 4.2-9 (here 6.3-8c, but tested with 4.11-13 onward as well, same issue)
  3. set launch options to PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 WINEDLLOVERRIDES="iphlpapi=b" %command%
  4. skipping videos might already cause a crash, watching them allows to start the first tutorial mission, game crashes after a while during the first tutorial (seems to crash always at the same point)

Additional Information

Tests with Proton 6.3-8c:

  • setting prefix to win7
  • PROTON_FORCE_LARGE_ADDRESS_AWARE=0
  • PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1
  • PROTON_OLD_GL_STRING=1
  • WINEDLLOVERRIDES="iphlpapi=b,msvcr71=b" (as msvcr71.dll is listed in the proton logfile with the path from the game's folder)
  • upgrading from 4.2-9 to 6.3-8c and adding PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1

none of the above made a difference, the game always crashed after a while.

Problematic line from the Proton 6.3-8c log file might to be:
45533.092:0108:010c:err:seh:dispatch_exception Fatal EXCEPTION_WINE_CXX_EXCEPTION exception (code=e06d7363) raised
