Hopefully this is the right place to ask and I'll put the following in summary tags for spoilers sake:

Spoiler the game works nicely, but there is a scene, where you need to play a VHS tape on a VCR hooked to an old CRT TV. The TV is showing static noise, but once you insert the VHS tape and press play, the screen goes black. I don't know, if this is because of a missing codec or if it's an issue with the game itself.

edit: It seems to be somewhat game breaking, since you cannot do the following lamp action, unless you have watched the video.

Video from the same spot:

Could it be possible to check, whether the video is using Media Foundation and be transcoded to a free format?

Llkroll 2022-07-01 github

Can confirm this is still an issue. I asked on their discord and it looks like they are using Electra Media Player inside of Unreal Engine to play the video. The videos itself are just regular h264 mp4s so I guess it's some kind of issue with the video player itself.

Hello, can someone please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options, reproduce the video playback issue, and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.)

There you go. I have used the latest proton experimental, still no luck.

@lkroll Could you get another log where you run into the video? I added a bunch of logging channels to this user_settings.py file. I had to change the file extension to .txt to be able to upload it, so you will need to rename it from user_settings.py.txt to user_settings.py. Then all you need to do is drop the user_settings.py file into ~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Proton - Experimental/. and delete PROTON_LOG=1 if you still have that enabled.
user_settings.py.txt

Done, hope that helps.

@Ikroll Thank you for the log. Unfortunately, that just ruled out one possible solution :/

Wwallcarpet40 2023-05-25 github

I have produced more logs for the game and its video playing problem. I used the user_settings.py file that @alasky17 recommended. (also added "PROTON_LOG": "1", to it. Otherwise it would not produce a log file)

The video files are located in ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Wanderer/Wanderer/Content/Movies/

The file in question is "Vhs Message Grandfather Final.mp4"

There are 3 log files attached:
1 using Proton Experimental
1 using GE-Proton8-3 (with "GST_DEBUG": "4" in the user_settings.py)
1 using GE-Proton8-3 (with more verbose log (with "GST_DEBUG": "4,WINE:7,protonaudioconverter:7,protonaudioconverterbin:7,protonvideoconverter:7,GST_CAPS:5",
"GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR": "1""

System specs:

AMD 5600X
Radeon 6800XT
16GB DDR4

Fedora 38
Kernel 6.2.15
KDE Plasma 5.27.5 (Wayland)
Latest Steam Beta (build date May 24, 2023)
SteamVR Beta 1.26.2

I have skimmed through the log files and with Proton Experimental, one thing that caught my eye was:

0:01:06.172407751 11446 0x7ffb3c004d50 WARN GST_ELEMENT_FACTORY gstelementfactory.c:467:gst_element_factory_make: no such element factory "h264parse"!
winegstreamer: failed to create h264parse, are 64-bit GStreamer "base" plugins installed?

With GE-Proton8-3, I do not have that h264parse log entry. Some notable entries that might be useful are:

0:01:22.520232642 13925 0x7ffa30002890 WARN basetransform gstbasetransform.c:1370:gst_base_transform_setcaps:<videoconvert1> transform could not transform video/x-raw, format=(string)I420, width=(int)500, height=(int)376, interlace-mode=(string)progressive, pixel-aspect-ratio=(fraction)376/375, chroma-site=(string)mpeg2, colorimetry=(string)bt709, framerate=(fraction)1/1 in anything we support
0:01:22.520783020 13925 0x7ffa30002890 ERROR WINE wg_transform.c:817:get_transform_output: Failed to push transform input, error -4

Do you guys know by looking at the log files, why Gstreamer fails to play the video? Is it the video part or the audio part? Could we transcode the video using Handbrake to something more suitable?

I ran mediainfo on the video file and the output of that is:
