Symptoms

I'm filing this as a compatibility report for this game, but the issue is underlying and has been seen on most games run via proton, only that in this one it's an actual issue blocking the usage of the game. If it's necessary I can file a separate report as a general issue for Proton itself.

I am using a Logitech G29 wheel, running newlg4ff drivers, which for years have improved the compatibility and quality of the force feedback for this device. On most games run via proton, some of the pedal axis might be mapped incorrectly (e.g. not pressing the clutch pedal is mapped to 100% throttle)

In this game in particular, the mapping is unable to properly detect the axes because they're being mapped as negatives (not pressing the pedal produces a 100% axis input), so when running the axis detection settings ingame, everything is mapped to what the game sees as an Axis 5 (clutch pedal)

so, in short:

  • Device properly working on several other games but with similar mapping issues (Race Room Experience 211500 ; Forza Horizon 4 1293830 to name a few)
  • Device correctly detected ingame as Logitech G29 Driving Force Wheel (on Proton Experimental only, 7.0-1 doesn't detect it properly, but this has already been patched on experimental)
  • Wheel axis is mapped correctly
  • Clutch pedal is mapped as inverse Axis 5 (not pressing it produces input signal)
  • Brake pedal can't be mapped
  • Throttle pedal can't be mapped
  • wrong button mappings (e.g. the default binding for the handbrake is the shit up/right paddle)

Reproduction

Run the game with a Logitech G29 wheel (both with the kernel's default drivers or newlg4ff) and try any race.
