Hello @chrisc174, please copy your system information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.
I am affected by this issue as well.
https://gist.github.com/megatog615/8cfa0abc9a10bc3ac8c0095a528cec75
This issue also affects other titles using the same or newer/older version of the engine, such as Wolfenstein: The New Order, so it's possible fixing this for Doom would also solve the problem for that.
Hope that helps, thanks kisak-valve!
I have this same issue, however, as I am using the i3 window manager, this happens when I move my cursor to another monitor, which switches the focus automatically. It seems that unfocusing the fullscreen window is what causes this.

In the game's video settings, when I switch away from "fullscreen" and instead use "borderless", this problem seems to go away.
Hey.
Had same issue with DOOM + Proton 3.7-6 Beta, Nvidia GTX 1070 + Arch Linux
steam system info
First thought that it might be vulkan + g-sync issue, but compared systems with a friends arch setup, we discovered that ALT-TAB will start to work perfectly when you set your gpu to performance mode, no more crashes in fullscreen ALT-TAB
So i don't know if it's a vulkan, proton or driver issue..but maybe someone else get's an idea =)
EDIT: Oh well, maybe a bit too soon :D it still crashes some times, but not so often anymore and can make multiple successful alt-tabs, before i couldn't do any.
how do you set your gpu to performance mode? do you mean cpu governor?
i am getting the same issue (black screen and unresponsive process whenever game loses focus) on mesa 18.3/llvm8, also on i3
afaik running borderless means things such as vsync (and freesync) wont work and often leads to lower performance, so not really a fix
Have this issue on Windows 10. Alt-Tab out of Doom to browse the web and can't get back in. Task Manager reports that Doom is not responding.
So maybe it's not a Proton issue.

Same here.
On archlinux, changing from the linux-zen kernel version 5.9.13 to the linux LTS kernel version 5.4.82 solved this problem for me.
I also did test other things like using Xorg instead of Wayland, using a different DE instead of Gnome, different proton versions and different configurations on the game settings, but none of these worked.
DOOM becomes black when minimized
Issue transferred from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/6274.

When I unfocus from the game window, doesn't matter if in fullscreen or not, or whether I'm in a menu or in the game itself, it minimizes and when I restore it, the window is all black with no audio and all I can do is force quit the game.
Open the game and Alt+Tab out of it or try clicking on another window, then restore it from the minimized state.
I found the same issue in Euro truck simulator 2 running the dx11 version on Fedora linux 37 with wayland and proton 7.0-4 (tested with experimental also, same problem).
Coming back from ALT TAB the game is frozen as if it was still on another window, its still possible to close the game on gnome and it will be saved before exiting confirming its not a crash.
HOTFIX: Move the game window to another workspace (tested on gnome, unsure if it works on other DEs) and use it instead of alt tab, that will fix it. Im even able to come out of a past black screen.
almost 5 (five) years 😁
this still happens
CachyOS kernel 6.15, nvidia driver 575
@PcChip I can't repro on my side, what proton version and desktop environment are you using?
@PcChip I can't repro on my side, what proton version and desktop environment are you using?
Proton Experimental, and the latest KDE (6.3.5)
also I should note that my Doom 2016 is set to Vulkan renderer
@PcChip Tried proton experimental, 10, and 9 with kde 6.3.5 on wayland, with both the vulkan and opengl renderer with a rx6600 with mesa 25.1.3. Rarely when tabbing back in I'd see a blackscreen for a split second before the image going back to normal.
Can you give more info about your setup? Did you try the game with older drivers and had the same issue? Do you have multiple monitors?
I have this isse.
I'm on CachyOS KDE 6.4.1, Wayland
RTX 4060 with driver 575.64
If I alt-tab and then come back to DOOM 2016, I just have a black screen and I have to restart the game
I was able to repro on a nvidia laptop, but not my amd desktop. Has anyone seen the issue with the game's opengl renderer? On my end, it only happened with the vulkan one

I have only tried vulkan, and I had the issue, so I don't know about opengl for now, I will try and report here

yes I can confirm that on OpenGL I don't have the issue.
So now we have narrowed down to being a Nvidia + Proton + Vulkan issue
Happens to me on AMD desktop

When alt tabbing to view a webpage or to do something else, going back to DooM 2016, I’m met with a black screen and have to restart.
