Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: V Rising
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1604030

System Information

I confirm:

  • [X] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [X] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

Crashes on startup. With PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 the game sometimes reaches the main menu, but then again crashes after the intro video (which isn't visible; only artifacts ), or upon attempting to join a server. With DXVK, it consistently crashes before reaching any menus.

Different Proton versions do not appear to change this behavior, except for 6.3: with Proton 6.3 the game consistently starts, but then stops on a "Steamworks initialization failed" screen.

Reproduction

Launch the game from Steam.

Can confirm that with recent GE builds the game similarly to the OP starts and then fails with "Steamworks initialization failed".

I can also confirm this behaviour with all recent proton and GE builds. Installs fine but crashes to desktop immediately on launch.

Sstatic-glitch 2022-05-17 github

Same crash on 7.0-2, Experimental, and GE 7-17. On Proton 6.3-8, I get the SteamWorks initialization problem, but I see others on the Discord having the SteamWorks problem on Windows as well.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X

Steam Runtime Version: steam-runtime_0.20220315.0
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080
Driver Version: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 510.60.02

FWIW, it was also doing this on the closed beta, but I was only in the last phase. I see Discord posts that say it worked in earlier stages of the closed beta, but don't have personal experience with it. I don't know if it was something the game devs updated, or a minor update to Proton that happened to break it (e.g. maybe 7.0-1 to 7.0-2?)

Sscrewylightbulb 2022-05-18 github

Proton Experimental now seems to be able to get past the "Steamworks initialization failed" thing, but now once you start a server, it gets stuck on a screen that says "Connecting" and then crashes after a while. Apologies I am not able to post a log right now.

Same, but after updating bleeding-edge Proton Experimental just now, I can at least stop hung game without it hanging whole Steam.

Also it seems Proton 6.21-GE-2 is the only one letting me see the loading screen with Steamworks initialization error (same as screenshot above from other user).

Confirmed. Running Steam through Wine is super buggy and not a fun experience, but I was able to start the game and play, so it's definitely a Proton issue.

Tried using Bottles+Windows Steam and the latest caffe runner. Seems to work more or less, but on the screen that says "Press space to wake up" it seems to not be taking and input. Particle effects are still going so it's not a crash.

I tried the windows version of steam yesterday, installed it via Lutris. The recommended settings for my game were high, but no matter the settings I used, the game ran like shit. I spent 4-5 hours yesterday working on it, but deemed it wasn't worth my time because the poor performance.

I disabled Steam Guard to make it work. You can also try enabling the Virtual Desktop feature in Bottles, it seems to render the steam guard screen correctly. You'll want to turn it off again when actually playing the game.

WWolf-086 2022-05-21 github

It's not that I have an issue getting steam guard to come up. Once I enter in my code, steam crashes. I tried running it as a virtual desktop, I tried disabling steam guard, the result is the same.

While it's okay to discuss most workarounds here, please keep in mind that this issue tracker is intended for Proton feedback. Issues with Steam for Windows run with wine/bottles is out of scope for this issue tracker and should be discussed elsewhere.

Sscrewylightbulb 2022-05-21 github

It does narrow down the problem to Steamworks via Proton specifically though.

Aabique 2022-05-21 github

I don't think that this thread needs more info today.
No one can use V-Rising on Linux, which means that they can reproduce this issue very easily, and work until they get the game playable.

Could you share the file please?

11player 2022-05-22 github

I don't think this is a good place to share binaries from strangers. You need to download Battlerite Royale from Steam to get that file, and it's free to play.

I have copied the DLL files, but the game is still crashing while attempting to start a solo session.

GGloriousEggroll 2022-05-23 github

Copy DLL method works here. Private PvE session works also.

Steps:

  1. Download free to play Battlerite Royale

  2. Copy from:
    Battlerite Royale/BattleriteRoyale_Data/Plugins/stun_steamnetworking.dll

To both of these locations:

VRising/VRising_Data/Plugins/x86_64/
VRising/VRising_Server/VRisingServer_Data/Plugins/x86_64/

  1. To fix intro video, launch game with:

Hhatani 2022-05-24 github

I confirm current Proton Experimental bleeding-edge let's you get into game (online play also). However, there are two issues:

  1. problem with graphics for me
    image

  2. you still need to kill the game on exit (it's not responding).

BONUS 3) Another interesting fact (not related to our issue) - you don't see any of your existing characters (as played via Bottles workaround) BUT - if you connect to same server, you will be loaded into old character :).

GGStefanowich 2022-05-24 github

Another interesting fact (not related to our issue) - you don't see any of your existing characters (as played via Bottles workaround)

The game doesn't utilize steam cloud saving for your private saves, so running the game through Bottles and regular Proton don't sync up, they're saved in different locations.

Use something like mlocate to find and copy your saves from Bottles.

SSeibz 2022-05-24 github

Thanks for adding those to Experimental bleeding edge. Quite the enjoyable game. Looks like all that's left to fix is needing to stop the game from Steam on exit.

Ggofman 2022-05-25 github

Hang on exit should hopefully be fixed too now in the latest Proton Experimental [bleeding-edge].

Aabique 2022-05-25 github

You are doing an amazing job :)

Ffishd72 2022-05-25 github

Can confirm that using the latest Proton Experimental [bleeding-edge] the game launches, is playable and exits cleanly.

I'm having an issue though where if the graphics options in-game are set to "Exclusive Fullscreen", then alt-tabbing out of the game to the desktop, and then attempting to return to the game using alt-tab does not redraw the game window, although the in-game cursor does appear. I then need to alt-tab back to Steam and close the game using the Stop button.

If the game is set to "Fullscreen Window", then alt-tabbing out of the game does not show me my desktop, I just get a non-interactive game screen until I alt-tab back to the game.

Windowed mode behaves as expected, although if I switch from Windowed mode, to Exclusive Fullscreen, the game window is not drawn correctly and I must shut it down.

Anyone seeing similar?

For about 8 days now (maybe slightly longer), V Rising is crashing pretty consistently, though not always in the same situation. Combat seems to trigger it, although I have crashed without it as well (though less frequently). The Unity Crash Handler is displayed shortly, afterwards the game terminates, and I can rejoin easily.

The last 2 reports on protondb.com suggest other people have similar problems.

I will try to add a proton log with a crash produced as soon as I have time to test more.

Edit 1: Created a log, but it's 91MB, so I've uploaded only the start with the exception, which happened not even 2 minutes into the game. If more is necessary, I can provide more of the log (though creating a gist from it times out).

Edit 2: Unity Crash Handler didn't show up this time, I killed the process myself as it was not shutting down on its own.

Edit 3: Tried yesterday again with the settings described by the latest ProtonDB entry, this time forcing Proton 7.0.4 (didn't have 7.0.3 available) and using the command line mesa_glthread=true gamemoderun %command%, no crashes.

I had this game working up until a few days ago, so it doesn't have anything to do with the 1.0 update as far as I can tell, when it suddenly started to CTD any time a large number of effects occured, ie during most boss fights, it's possible a driver or library update caused something to go sideways, but I have no clue where to start. I've attached logs for Proton 9.0.1, Experimental, and GE-9.4, all of which experience the same crashes, as well as my system info according to Steam's System Information tool.

The issue I'm having that I haven't seen anyone report yet is most of the models in the game don't seem to render for me. The game runs super smooth without crashing but everything from walls to trees and rocks are just not rendered. . Some things, like the tannery, chests, and grass (but not the furnace or workbenches) are rendered. Since I haven't seen anyone else have this issue I am assuming that I'm doing something wrong or weird here.

The only unique thing I can think of is I have all of my steam downloads in a separate drive (/shared, which is owned by root:shared) which is an XFS filesystem.

I have tried systemctl start --user gamemoded and using gamemoderun %command% but that had no effect.

Edit: Looks like this resolved for me after using the radeon vulkan implementation by installing the vulkan-radeon and amd-vulkan-prefixes packages and setting the game's command to vk_radv %command%

I'm running: arch linux linux64 6.14.6-arch1-1 mesa 1:25.1.0-1 vulkan-radeon 1:25.1.0-1

proton hotfix and proton experimental same issues. kde on wayland if that matters. intel 14900k and a 7900 xtx.

The lag time bomb is due to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/11446
The current workaround is to enable the steam overlay or use LD_PRELOAD=""

Thank you. Enabling overlay and screen recording did fix it. What an odd issue.

Symptoms

The camera won't rotate with the right mouse click as intended.

Reproduction

-Install Pop_OS! 24.04
-Update the system "sudo apt update -y"
-Install steam .deb
-Install V Rising
-Use proton 10.0-3 (or any other version after 8)
-Host a game.
-Use the right mouse click and move the mouse around simultaneously, the camera doesn't rotate.

if i want to venture a guess, the mouse doesn't lock.
I tried using --force-grab-cursor flag, but that didn't make any difference.
