Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Blaster Master Zero 3
  • Steam AppID of the game: 1588380

System Information

  • Steam Deck
  • Proton version: Tested all available on Steam from 4 onwards

I confirm:

  • [x ] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [ x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Symptoms

The game loses some textures for the textboxes making it unplayable on the Steam Deck.
I created a dxvk.conf and tried all possible options (no change). I also tried all Proton versions from 4 onward up to
Proton experimental. Furthermore I tested with Proton GE7.4 no change.

Reproduction

Interestingly the game works more or less flawless on my desktop (tested on Fedora 33/35 with kernels 5.13 till 5.19). Also the log does not show any obvious errors and seems to be the same as on desktop. So I am not even sure if this is a Proton issue in the first place, but rather a problem of drivers/kernel on the Deck. Could someone verify, or give me pointers what to try next, or where to report?

Have the same issue (missing textures/tiles on the Steam Deck).
Tested with Proton 7.0-4, Experimental and Proton-GE 7-37.
Tried PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 -> Game fails to launch (hangs in steam launch animation).

Jjeffkrull 2022-11-25 github

PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 only seems to work in desktop mode, if used in Gaming Mode then it prevents the game from even launching (as mentioned before, it causes Steam to hang on the launch animation). But even doing this in desktop mode, the missing textures/dialogue boxes/etc do not appear on the Deck.

Short update: It seems to be an AMD issue. Since I switched my Desktop to a Radeon RX 6600 XT I have the same problem on Desktop. It worked fine with the NVidia card.

Hello @maldun, please add PROTON_LOG=1 %command% to the game's launch options and attach the generated $HOME/steam-$APPID.log to this issue report as a file. (Proton logs compress well if needed.) Also, please copy the contents of Steam Runtime Diagnostics from Steam (Steam -> Help -> Steam Runtime Diagnostics) and put it in a gist, then include a link to the gist in this issue report.

See seems to be a driver issue. The guys from DXVK were so kind to lead me to the problem. I works with Mesa 23.1.

NOTE: Current Steam Deck with Mesa 23.1 still does not work.

Steamos on deck has updated and should be up to date mesa drivers wise now.

I tested the game on the newest SteamOS release (3.5.5), and the missing textures in the opening and during cutscenes all seem to work now. I haven't played through the whole game to be sure, but a quick test is actually playable now.
